Gazing as a method of cultural exploration
When the seawater evaporates to form the salt crystals, this seemingly ordinary natural process has accordingly been carrying out Taiwan's maritime wisdom for centuries.
“Ocean Future: Saline Realm Gazing Maritime Cultural Arts Exhibition” is curated by the Design and Creative Center, College of Design of National Taichung University of Science and Technology, and subsidized by the Ocean Affairs Council's 2025 Maritime Cultural Leadership Program.
Focusing on traditional salt-making culture, three artists explore ocean memory and future possibilities through image documentation, material experimentation, and digital interaction. The exhibition title "Ocean Future" draws from the Taiwanese concept of "hai-hai" (vast ocean) and plays with "future matters" and "future is," questioning existence and action while using art to create new cultural expressions and contemporary interpretations of Taiwan's maritime wisdom.
Walking through the exhibition, visitors experience three stages: Chiu Hsu-Lien's photography captures the time and memory of salt fields; Hou Chun-Chun's salt crystal artworks reveal the experimental spirit of material transformation; and Yen Hui-Yun's digital interactive installation invites visitors to engage in future dialogue. These three artistic approaches weave together the past and future, matter and spirit, tradition and innovation.
In this "salt realm gazing" journey, each pause becomes a rediscovery of Taiwan's ocean culture.
When we gaze at ocean culture, what are we really searching for?
Step into the exhibition and explore this wisdom and possibility from salt and sea.
Time in Salt and Sea: A Landscape Remembered|Chiu Hsu-Lien
Time in Salt and Sea begins in the salt fields along Taiwan’s coast—a land shaped by co-existence with the ocean. Through photography, this series builds a space of "slow time," capturing traces of labor, light, and salt crystallization as temporal imprints in motion. Salt fields exist on the threshold through the intervention of nature and humans, inviting a seeing of a non-narrative, but poetic atmosphere.
These images do not aim to freeze moments, instead to embody the sedimentation of time across space. The crystallization of salt becomes not only an imprint of industrial time but also a cultural symbol—formed through the confluence of natural forces and local knowledge. As the tradition of salt farming fades from daily lives, photography has become a medium to restore our relationships with land and sea. It is in the silence of each individual salt crystal that we enter the depth of time—where the lens becomes a slow vessel for seeing and reflection.
Silent Words of Salt Light won the 2025 European Photography Awards Gold Prize and multiple Honourable Mentions, earning international recognition.
Sea-Salt Crystals: Material Exploration - Experimental Art of Salt Crystallization |Hou Chun-Chun
Sea-Salt Crystals draws inspiration from Taiwanese traditional salt-making wisdom, exploring the mysterious transformation of seawater from liquid to solid. Through her unique “salt crystal technique,” the artist captures the visual poetry of material change, controlling temperature, concentration, and time to reveal the accidental and inevitable formation of seawater crystals. Clear white crystals bloom on black surfaces, creating layered effects like ink paintings—sometimes resembling swirling clouds, sometimes like rolling mountain ranges.
These experimental works do not deliberately pursue realistic or abstract expression.
Instead, they let natural laws find their freest form between control and spontaneity. The pieces seem to capture the rhythm of ocean life, flow like clouds and water, and reveal the patterns of cosmic movement. Each crystal formation becomes a dialogue between artist and nature, finding certainty within chance, discovering permanence within change.
As traditional salt-making skills gradually disappear, salt crystal art has become a new way to preserve and reinterpret ocean culture through artistic practice.
Ocean Hearts Flow-Digital Odyssey of 16 Souls |Yen Hui-Yun
When sunlight pours across Taiwan’s southern coast, rows of shimmering salt pans come into view—reservoirs of a profound salt-making culture and the wisdom of earlier generations. Salt is indispensable to human life, and salt-making is a craft that dances with the weather. When typhoons strike and torrential rain sweeps the plains, it becomes a trial of character and judgment—do you adapt, wait, or turn crisis into opportunity?
“Ocean Hearts Flow” combines salt-pan culture with the MBTI 16 personality types, using AI co-creation and immersive interaction to invite you to step into the role of a salt-pan owner. Under extreme weather, you weigh whether to respond, to wait, or to transform risk into advantage, while observing how different personalities make choices, assume risk, and allocate resources. Through digital reframing, the project opens new interpretive vistas for this heritage, and through scenario simulation and gameful storytelling, it turns climate uncertainty into an entry point for understanding industrial resilience and public engagement—extending the sustained visibility of the salt-pan culture in the digital age.
