The structure of the subject pages is very similar. On the subject page you will find links to all the supporting documents and information required for summative assessment
The top half of the subject page relates to internal assessment and the bottom half contains information regarding external assessment
We will spend time looking at the documents for internal assessment.
Learning to read a standard is one of the most useful things for understanding the requirements of the standard
Watch Part 1 and Part 2 unpacking an achievement standard from the NZQA spotlight series
There are 3 short videos ( total of just under 10 minutes)
Choose an achievement standard that you are currently teaching or will be teaching this year. and follow through as you watch/listen to each video
Each subject has a number of achievement standards at each level that can be used to assess learning.
To find a quick summary of all the standards for your subject download the subject matrix document . This is found on the right hand side of your subject's NCEA on TKI resources page.
Navigate through your subject home page to find it
We teach from the curriculum which is found on TKI under Senior Secondary Guides and assess student learning using standards which are found along with supporting document's on the NZQA site and additional resources on TKI
Exploring the documents related to assessment
Open and complete the google doc.
Note you will be asked to make a copy first.
Other key documents that you might find useful
TKI resources for internally assessed achievement standards . These are sample tasks that illustrate what an assessment task might look like. These are publicly available and should not be used as is for assessment as is.
National Moderators reports. These highlight points that were identified during external moderation by NZQA moderators. They are no longer published but provide some useful background reading
Conditions of Assessment: the conditions of assessment document for your learning area and level are found on the right hand side of the NCEA on TKI resources page . There is a document for each level for each subject.
Each document is prefaced by general conditions for all standards followed by standard specific conditions. This document is often overlooked
In an ideal world the learning would drive the assessment however in reality we tend to look at the standards we have available to assess learning and adapt our local curriculum/teaching programme around these.
"Unpacking" a standard can help clarify I thinking and get us away from doing what we have always done.
The template shared here is designed to work on collaboratively
I have found the template on the right, adapted from Wiggins and McTighe, one of the most useful tools for really thinking about the what and why of what we want our students to learn.
The template is designed to be worked on collaboratively.
Download the blank template and a science exemplar and have a go at completing one for a standard that you have recently used or may soon use.
There is not right or wrong way to approach this
