Junior Curriculum
classroom activities
Measurement
Make it practical - measure things inside and outside the classroom using a 30 cm ruler and a tape measure
Set up a measurement scavenger hunt around the school
Make links to number, statistics, shape and generalise to algebra
All about me
(Year 9 Level 2 to 5+)
(Year 9 Level 2 to 5+)
Measure: armspan, height, feet, handspan, forearm
Number: Use mm, cm, m [multiply and divide by 10,100,1000]
Statistics: Collate class data and draw graphs of class data - notice & wonder
Take samples from Census at School - draw graphs, notice and wonder
Masterpiece 2 from CAS
Find relationships: eg height to armspan. Height to foot length; foot length: forearm
Generalise [in words and symbols] height is approximately 6 times the foot length, h=6x where x represents the length of a foot
Da vinci ratios from Figure it out - compare ratios by converting to decimals (l5)
the rectangle could simply be a rectangle or it could be a swimming pool, a taro patch, a section.
Measurement, number (factors), patterns, generalising
The surface area of a person
(Y10 Level 3 to 5+)
(Y10 Level 3 to 5+)
Measuring, modelling (3D), calculating, working together to solve a problem
Moonbase Alpha [robyn to find and share]
What is the area of my hand ?
(Y9 Level 2 to 5+)
(Y9 Level 2 to 5+)
Trace around the outside of my hand, palm down
Divide the hand up into between 3 and 5 geometric shapes eg rectangle, triangle, trapezium Modelling (2D)
Take measurements in cm or mm
Use the measurements to find the area of each shape
Use these calculations to find the approximate area of my hand 9 in square cm and/or square mm
Find the volume of chocolate
on a mallowpuff/toffee pop (Level 4-5+) o
on a tim tam (Level 3-4+)
Give each students a biscuit
They must take all measurements they need before they can eat
Make a "greenhouse"
What mathematics is hidden inside this activity and at what level ?
Area pictures
Using at least 3 different geometric shapes create a picture.
Write a question involving area for others to solve
Who are we?
Number [Fractions, decimals, percentage], measurement [units, accuracy, x10,100,1000], statistics
What does it mean to be a Kiwi? - a possible lesson sequence
