The Great Rift Valley is a long depression in the earth which runs down the eastern side of Africa. It extends from Syria in the Middle East, right down to Mozambique in south-eastern Africa. The tearing of the earth's plate caused many eruptions and earthquakes. Volcanic mountains formed either side of the rift and the valley floor sank lower to form wide flat plains
Today, this huge geological feature provides a unique landscape of mountains and escarpments, valleys and lakes.The Rift's unique landscapes provide some of the most famous habitats for wildlife on the continent.
The Rift valley in the northern Tanzania is characterized by astonishingly beautiful and wild nature. Hardly any tourists go there and being there is almost like traveling through time and space. It was in these surroundings that mankind originated, which is proved by the many prehistoric human skulls which have been excavated from the slopes of the valley. This is why the area is also referred to as the cradle of humankind. Now the area is inhabited by the proud Maasai people, and if you want, you can go for a walking safari with the Maasais. Nobody knows the area better than them and they can easily point out the footprints and sign from the wild animals – as well as recognizing their sounds from long distances.
Numbers of animal can be seen on your walk sometime really close.. animal like Giraffe , zebras and the famous antelope Gerenuk also known as giraffe antelope meters are away from you .
As this area is inhabited by Maasais on your walk you will get a chance to visit one of the maasai boma and get to know them while enjoying the beautiful view around you.
