CONSIDERATIONS WHEN WORKING WITH TRAFFICKING SURVIVORS

Trafficking survivors often experience many forms of physical, sexual and emotional abuse. This may make a person less likely to seek help or trust helping professionals.

  • Distrust in law enforcement

  • Distrust in helping professionals (i.e Advocates)

  • Distrust in medical professionals

  • Safety, fear of trafficker

  • Housing or lack of housing

  • Lack of support persons

  • Often do not identify as a victim or sexual violence or human trafficking

HOW TO IDENTIFY A POTENTIAL VICTIM:

  • Accompanied by another person who appears controlling

  • Signs of physical or pyschological abuse

  • Lack of identification (State ID, Passport, etc.)

  • Under 18 and providing commercial sex acts (exchange of "sex" for money, gifts, phone, place to sleep, etc.)

  • Refers to someone as "pimp" or "daddy"

  • Uses language from "the life," "trick," "date," "the game," (see handout Glossary of Terms below for more information

  • Person has a tattoo or "brand" and is reluctant to talk about it (common examples: name on face, arm, ankle, lower back, crown or fruit symbol)

  • Person displays secrecy about the assault

  • Shared phone with a non-family member

  • Multiple Assailants

WHAT TO DO AS AN ADVOCATE IF YOU SUSPECT HUMAN TRAFFICKING?

  • Follow the victim's lead

  • Work with medical professionals to ensure access to care

  • Let the victim know their options about reporting:

      • Not reporting is an option!

      • Report to local law enforcement

      • Report to FBI's 24-Hour Desk

          • 312-421-6700

          • Press 2 when prompted

      • Report to National Human Trafficking Hotline

          • Provide information about suspected Trafficker without disclosing own name

          • 888-373-7888

          • Provide as many details as possible about the type of trafficking, location, offenders, phone numbers, etc.

  • Do not promise safety!

  • Call your BU if you need assistance.
