Teaching in Other States

All teacher candidates who are recommended for licensure through an VTSU education or school counseling will allow them to teach in the state of Vermont. Because we are an institution that receives federal financial aid, we are required to inform you that the degree you are seeking will allow you to work in Vermont.

Additionally, your license will allow you to teach in most states as well, as per the NASDTEC Interstate Agreement.

If you have a Vermont license and want to teach in a different state, you will need to communicate with that state, even if we have reciprocity, to determine what you need to do to be able to teach in that state. Typically, this might involve completing some applications and paperwork, getting a background check, and usually paying a small fee. Occasionally states will ask you to participate in professional development or coursework related to policies in that state. Each state has different requirements, and they change often, so it is best to communicate with the state you want to teach in the semester you are applying for jobs in that state. You can check for latest information here.

Currently we have reciprocity with all states, the District of Columbia, Guam, and DODEA. States that have not signed the agreement are South Dakota, New Mexico, and New York, as per the NASDTEC agreement from 2020-2025

Use this tool to find the state you want to teach in and click on the state. This will tell you more details about what that state will ask of you when you apply for your license there.
