EDU 2005 Reading, Writing, and Math for Educators is a 1-credit course that runs each Spring semester in a synchronous online format. Enrollment in this course includes enrollment for the Praxis Core and support in preparation. Ask your advisor about registering for this course. It is an optional course (not a required course).
The Praxis is a test that is designed, administered, and scored by a national company called ETS. Many states require teacher candidates to pass one or more Praxis exams to become a licensed teacher. Vermont is a state that requires the Praxis Core for all teacher candidates, and the Praxis II for some teacher candidates, depending on the endorsement you are pursuing.
Overview of Vermont Testing Requirements (Vermont Agency of Education 9/1/22)
All Vermont teachers and school counselors must demonstrate proficiency in reading, writing and math. There are three pathways towards this.
The first pathway is to take and pass Praxis Core. These sections can be taken at the same time (5752) or separately (5713, 5723, 5733). There is no limit on how many times you can take the Praxis Core.
Praxis Core Combined (5752)
Reading (5713) Qualifying score = 156
Writing (5723) Qualifying score = 162
Math (5733) Qualifying score = 146
If you need to retake one or more of these sections we highly recommend using study guides to prepare:
Some of our students have said that this video has been helpful in preparing for the Praxis Core Math. A teacher walks through math problems. Watch her write the problem on the board, pause the video, try to solve the problem, and then start the video to check your answers. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mFhC3J9riyk
The second pathway is to demonstrate proficiency in reading, writing, and math through course work.
For more information and to apply for a Basic Skills Praxis Course Waiver please contact the VTSU Licensure Office, edulo@vermontstate.edu.
The third pathway is through an alternative test.
If you took the SAT, ACT, GRE, ASVAB, or a basic skills test in other US state your scores may qualify you to be waived from the Praxis Core. Read more about this HERE.

How to Register for an ETS account
In order to register to take a Praxis test, students must set up their own ETS account. Below you will find step-by-step instructions on how to do so.:
Click on the yellow 'Login/Register' button (in the top right corner)
Click on the Praxis button that says 'Praxis Sign In/Create Account'
Under 'New User' click 'Create Account'
Fill in the required information to create your account (you will need your social security number)
*When setting up your account, use an email address that you plan to keep (you do not have to use your VTSU email account), and be sure to use a username and password that you can remember, as you will need to log into your account multiple times over the course of the next few years.
Once your ETS account is created you will be able to register to take a Praxis test. This is also where your will be able to find your scores after you've taken a test.
Accommodations and Disabilities
If you have a documented disability and are eligible for accommodations, you can apply for accommodations during testing. Once your paperwork is processed, you will be given options of dates and locations where you can take the test and receive those accommodations. Please contact Michelle Feiner for guidance and assistance with Praxis accommodations.

Fees
Fees for each Praxis test vary depending on which test you are taking. You can see an overview of the fees here.
Depending on your family income, you may also be eligible to apply for a Fee Waiver. Visit this page to read more about eligibility for a Fee Waiver. If you are eligible, you should follow the instructions on the ETS website for completing the Fee Waiver Form (you will need to apply for the Fee Waiver and then register once you have been approved).
The Student Government Association will sometimes give students scholarships to help pay for the Fees, and the student Emergency fund is also an option for financial support.
The NVU Education Department also has funding to support the fees. If you would like to apply for assistance, please email Rebecca.Pastor@vermontstate.edu. This fund was developed by a Johnson State College alumnus and are only available to NVU Johnson students.
Retaking a Test
There is no limit to the number of times you can take a Praxis Test, although taking tests multiple times is expensive and time consuming. As of March 2022, you can retake the same test (or subtest) once every 28 days. You can read more about that here under " Retaking a Test."
