This section includes highlights of Hidayah's own personal learning experience and reflections on her journey taking Bachelor Degree in Education, Teaching English as a Second Language; minoring in Instructional Technology at International Islamic University Malaysia, Gombak.
SMK Taman Melawati, Kuala Lumpur
During teaching practicum, we were given 6 months to teach in a public school of our choice as a prerequisite to complete our Bachelor Degree in Education.
I remembered the first day I had to enter my class for the first time ever. First impression was a big deal for me. I was clueless on how to act as I had fears on how their response will be. I was very nervous yet excited to meet them. However, I told myself, just to be myself and not overdue it.
The first class was just about getting to know my audience. Being a novice teacher of course I had to Google on ice breaking sessions and the most simple ice breaking activity was this game called, 'Never have I ever...'
I gave it a little twist by asking the students to sit in a circle and a random student was blind folded and had to twirl around while pointing at a selected student until I said stop. Each student had to hold up 5 fingers. Then, when one tells the class of something that they had never done, others who had similarly never done that something also would then hold 1 finger down. Who managed to hold down 5 fingers the fastest wins the game.
I never thought such a simple phrase game would engage the students that much. That's where I managed to build a bond between them. Although, on the first day, I almost lost my voice, class management was crucial I needed to learn more on how to control my audience.
After all the fun session, I find it important to set the ground rules in the classroom on the first day so that students are aware of the teacher's expectation and follows it.
This is one of the many video assignments me and my colleagues enjoyed producing as a requirement for one of our course, Teaching English Grammar.
We produced this instructional video as to explain one of the main topics in English Grammar: Adjectives of Comparison.
One of the challenges of producing this is to act the incorrect words and to repeat acting the scene with the correct use of Grammar but it was a lot of fun working with a team who are easy to work with.
During our micro teaching presentation, we attached linked this video to a Web 2.0 Quiz tool, (Kahoot) for our audience to identify the main elements based on the topic presented.
I find that this assignment project was very useful as I actually used this instructional video during my teaching practicum for my students on delivering the Grammar component - Adjectives of Comparison.
The students were at awe to see their teacher on Youtube (that grabbed their attention quite a while) to remember the delivery of the video.
However, I find that this kind of video may not cater a full understanding about the content, but may grab their attention to the use of it in our everyday lives.
