Chinese Language Programs

Introduction

A core component of the Taiwan Huayu Bilingual Exchanges of Selected Talent (BEST) Program is the Student Scholarship Program. The Student Scholarship Program aims to support overseas students with a monthly scholarship while they pursue intensive Chinese language studies at NTU. The goal of this program is to help students improve their Chinese proficiency through immersive Chinese-learning programs, and expand the accessibility of Chinese language learning.

NTU offers two renowned Chinese language programs on the main campus in Taipei; the International Chinese Language Program (ICLP) and the Chinese Language Division (CLD), Language Center. Both programs use the surrounding resources of NTU and Taipei to engage students in holistic learning of the Chinese language and culture in Taiwan. Through this scholarship program, students will select to enroll in Chinese course(s) in one of the programs. Both ICLP and CLD issue an end-of-course grade report to students. In addition, the Office of International Affairs at NTU will also issue a formal NTU transcript indicating grades and credits of Chinese courses to the students.

Each of the courses is around a quarter long (about 3 months), and students will enroll in at least one-quarter of Chinese courses at NTU. During students’ duration of Chinese language studies in Taiwan, they will receive a monthly scholarship of NT $25,000 (approx. US $800).

Outside of language studies in the classroom, students will have the opportunity to participate in the "Hands Together” initiative during their time in Taiwan. In this extra-curricular initiative, students will partner with NTU students, and together participate in activities with local elementary or junior high school students to help them practice speaking and comprehending English. This initiative complements the academic portion of this program in that it provides students another way to get to know the culture of Taiwan through meeting their junior partners and speaking with them.

The Office of International Affairs at National Taiwan University provides short-term Chinese language programs for international students ranging from three to six weeks. Students can immerse themselves in Chinese language classes and cultural activities to explore Taiwan's vibrant culture and customs. They can also join day trips to experience the beauty of the country. Each student will receive NTU short-term program credits, transcripts, and a certificate upon completion of the program.

Students from our partner university are eligible to receive a weekly stipend of NT $6,000 (approx. US $200) to assist with living expenses throughout the program.

The Chinese Language Division in the Language Center of National Taiwan University (NTU) was established in October 1984. It initially offered programs on Mandarin Chinese language training and facilitated research projects in this field. To cater to the rising trend of international cultural exchanges, to enable overseas Chinese people to better understand our country, to facilitate foreigners in learning Mandarin and Chinese dialects, and also to support the demand of Chinese language teachers, our division started to provide Chinese courses to the public in 2000. CLD offers Chinese language courses in diverse difficulty levels, and supports instructors in engaging students in cultural activities that will help students better apply and understand the language in its cultural context.

Classes are conducted in small groups (5-7 students) with three hours per day, totaling 15 hours per week.

ICLP offers intensive and diverse Chinese language courses in a Mandarin-speaking environment which upholds much of its traditional Chinese heritage and culture within the framework of a modern democratic society.

ICLP enables students to achieve broad and independent competence in spoken Chinese and to develop reading skills needed for academic research or professional use. In combination with cultural activities that explore the culture of Taiwan and the Chinese language in depth, ICLP provides students with learning experiences that are fully immersive and beyond the classroom. ICLP has an audio-visual room, reference library and computer lab with full Internet access for the use of students. Situated within the campus of National Taiwan University (NTU), it enjoys the benefits of a central location in Taipei along with access to the full range of NTU's academic, extracurricular, and health resources.

Classes are conducted in 1 one-on-one class and 3 group classes (2-4 students) per day, totaling 20 hours per week.

NTU Plus Academy, which offers short-term programs for international students from around the world, encourages interdisciplinary learning and intercultural exchange to enhance cross-border academic collaboration.

This program has been designed for students of all levels, beginning or advanced, who want to improve their Chinese fluency. The in-class curriculum provides opportunities for interaction and improving communication abilities. The course includes different themes that tie together the daily language class, cultural activities, and interactions with locals. Additionally, NTU offers a series of English-based lectures and field trips that allow you to explore the environmental and socio-cultural aspects of Taiwan.

Students will study intensively for 3 hours per day for a total of 15 hours per week throughout the program. Complementing classroom learning are interactive Chinese language tutoring stations and captivating cultural excursions.
