Indiana University

Introduction

Indiana University is a public research institution with a scope of nine campuses, including the two core campuses in Bloomington and Indianapolis. Particularly in the humanities and social sciences, IU has ranked highly among colleges and universities in the United States. IU offers more than 70 language courses every year, and is the only institution with three language flagship programs in the U.S. One of the flagship programs is the Chinese Flagship Program, led by a NTU alumna, Dr. Yea-Fen Chen. Dr. Yea-Fen Chen is a leading scholar and educator in the field of teaching Chinese as a second language, and currently serves on the International Advisory Board for NTU’s premier language program, International Chinese Language Program (ICLP).

With IU’s strength in language education and our strong partnership with IU, and the high potential for Chinese language education to develop in the state of Indiana, we consider IU a perfect partner in helping us broaden the reach of our Chinese language education resources.

NTU Liaison Office, Chinese Language Program

The NTU Liaison Office is established as a resource hub for Chinese teaching and learning at Indiana University Bloomington.

This Office will operate and carry out initiatives based on the following goals:

  • Facilitate programs for various IU populations (faculty, students, and staff) related to Chinese language and cultures

  • Support the Chinese language instructor and teaching assistant(s) in their academic affairs at IU

  • Promote collaboration in various academic disciplines (research and teaching) between faculty of the two institutions

  • Conduct research on understanding of the U.S. higher education system, specifically in the realm of international partnerships

Temple University

Introduction

Temple University is a public research institution that has six campuses/sites in Pennsylvania and two international campuses abroad in Rome and Japan. Among the various institutions in Philadelphia, Temple University has the largest student population and boasts a comprehensive array of colleges and majors. One of the Colleges is the College of Liberal Arts, which offers multiple Chinese language-related majors, including Asian Studies, Asian and Middle Eastern Languages and Studies, and Chinese Major. From the introduction of this potential collaboration, Temple has expressed positive interest in the program and zeal for continued collaborative efforts with NTU. With such enthusiasm and drive to expand student learning opportunities, we consider Temple an excellent partner in helping us bring our Chinese language resources to more students abroad.

The University of Texas at Austin

Introduction

The University of Texas Austin is a public research university and is a key center for academic research. UT Austin has long valued the development of research and scholars in the field of Taiwanese cultural and humanities studies. For instance, in 2012, the Taiwan Resource Center for Chinese Studies was established under the collaboration between the National Central Library (Taiwan) and the University Library at UT Austin. In March of this year (2021), the Department of Asian Studies at UT Austin has also just launched the Center for Taiwanese Studies, "a multidisciplinary facility dedicated to promoting Taiwan’s society, history and culture on the UT campus" (Taha, 2021, Texas Global). Through the partnership of Taiwan Huayu BEST Program, UT Austin will be able to create a strong synergy between its Taiwan studies and NTU’s Mandarin language resources.

Harvard University

Introduction

Harvard University is a private research university and the oldest higher education institution in the United States. Harvard is composed of ten academic faculties in addition to the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, and is one of the most prestigious institutions in the world. The Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies at Harvard is one of the leading postgraduate research centers in the field of Chinese studies. In 2020, NTU and Harvard commenced the collaboration of Harvard Taipei Academy, and now, we look to further solidify our partnership through the Taiwan Huayu BEST Program. As a leading educational institution, Harvard students and scholars who benefit through the Chinese language resources in this program will be able to further utilize their Chinese proficiency to make an impact in their respective fields.

Washington University in St. Louis

Introduction

Washington University in St. Louis (WashU, or WUSTL) is a private research university with its main campus (Danforth) mostly split between unincorporated St. Louis County, Missouri, and Clayton, Missouri. It is often ranked among the most prestigious universities in the world by major education publications. They are committed to learning and exploration, to discovery and impact. Through the Taiwan Huayu BEST program, NTU International College and the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at Washington University in St. Louis are working together to promote deeper cooperation and exchange, such as exchange of Chinese language teachers and selection of students to learn Chinese language and experience Taiwanese culture at NTU, in accordance with their respective educational and academic needs.

Michigan State University

Introduction

As a public land-grant research university, Michigan State University has been advancing the common good with uncommon will for more than 165 years. A top global university, MSU pushes the boundaries of discovery to make a better world while providing students with life-changing opportunities. In collaboration with the International College of National Taiwan University, MSU and its Department of Linguistics, Languages and Cultures will promote and develop opportunities in Mandarin learning, teaching and academic exchange for faculty and students.

University of St Andrews

Introduction

The University of St Andrews is a public university in Scotland, the oldest in the country and the third oldest in the English-speaking world after Oxford University and Cambridge University. Seven centuries of history link the students with the town, leading to the ancient and yet modern institution apparent today. Starting in 2022, NTU and the University of St Andrews will have more frequent exchanges of Chinese language teachers and students coming to NTU for learning and experiencing Taiwan.
