In 2025, MLAP partnered with the University of West Florida and Florida Sea Grant for the inagural Seafood Heritage Series program seafood lovers gathered at the UWF Historic Trust's Museum of Commerce for "A Mullet Story: Cast Nets and Cooking Traditions," celebrating Northwest Florida's rich seafood heritage! With a full house of enthusiastic guests, we explored the history, sustainability, and cultural significance of mullet fishing—and, of course, enjoyed some incredible dishes prepared by local chefs.
Expert speakers shared insights on the global connections of Florida’s mullet fishery, regulations shaping the industry, and the experiences of local fishermen. Chefs wowed us with delicious mullet creations, from fried sliders to smoked dip, grits, and mullet-topped fresh oysters! Hands-on activities and exhibits gave attendees the chance to explore maritime history, local ecology, and even try their hand at net-making and net-throwing.
A huge thank you to everyone who attended. Your enthusiasm and love for Gulf Coast traditions made this event a huge success! Florida Sea Grant shot a video "Know Thy Oyster" during the event, which can be viewed on their YouTube channel by clicking the button below.
