The Northwest Florida Maritime Landscape Alliance for Preservation, Inc. (MLAP) is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the rich maritime heritage of Northwest Florida. This region's history is deeply connected to its coastal and aquatic environments, including the Gulf of Mexico, estuaries, rivers, streams, and springs. MLAP focuses on safeguarding the unique sites and landscapes that reflect this history, ensuring that the diverse stories of the people who have inhabited and interacted with these environments over thousands of years are told and remembered. Through preservation efforts, educational programs, and community outreach, MLAP works to protect the cultural and ecological assets of Northwest Florida's maritime landscape for future generations.
Northwest Florida partnerships inspire and educate residents and visitors with an appreciation for how our maritime history influenced the region, the nation, and the world. This rich heritage and natural landscape are a source of pride for our resilient communities, providing a viable recreational, economic, and conservation influence.
The mission of MLAP is to create a partnership among Northwest Florida natural, cultural, and archaeological organizations and local groups to encourage grassroot collaboration, provide education, advocacy, guidance, facilitation and a vision for the sustainable preservation of heritage and environmental resources for present and future generations.
The specific purposes for which the Corporation is organized are:
a) To enhance local grassroot efforts in preserving the cultural and natural resources in Northwest Florida while telling untold stories, connected to the maritime landscape, that are locally, regionally, and nationally significant.
b) To make sure the voices of local communities are heard, their history, natural and cultural resources are maintained, in a sustainable manner, by bringing different groups of stakeholders and communities together as a joint effort.
c) To educate the populace and governmental bodies about the significance of natural and cultural resources while creating preservation and environmental conservation stewards.
d) To promote a well-balanced strategy for preservation of Northwest Florida’s heritage and natural resources by coordinating and assisting institutional and community efforts to preserve and interpret selected sites, structures, artifacts, living cultural traditions that tell the story of the area’s history while promoting regional pride.
e) To mobilize the community both public and private for the support of MLAP.
f) To accept and administer grants and other monies in furtherance of the enumerated purposed stated above.
