We recognize that Nicole's work with the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve (NERR) has shed light on over 12,000 years of human history embedded along the Apalachicola system, including the heritage of Indigenous communities such as the Apalachee, Creek, and Seminole Tribes, as well as the legacy of enslaved and emancipated people of color.
By integrating digital modeling, heritage site recording, and community engagement, Nicole's project has highlighted the importance of ecosystem services valued by past and present communities. Her efforts in organizing "Community Conversations on Heritage at Risk" workshops and surveys have fostered local input, drawing from diverse community groups. This work has not only provided a more inclusive interpretation of local heritage but has also informed management decisions for heritage and environmental resources.
Nicole's dedication to engaging with community groups, enhancing educational and interpretive programs, and guiding future research has strengthened the ties between the Reserve staff, program partners, and the local communities. Her outstanding contributions ensure that the rich cultural and historical heritage of the Apalachicola system is preserved for future generations.
Presented with deep appreciation for her unwavering commitment to cultural preservation and community engagement.
