The Destin–Fort Walton Beach Natural Resources team is honored with the 2025 MLAP Outstanding Preservation Award for elevating maritime and coastal stewardship through science, community engagement, and bold vision. Led by Natural Resources Chief Alex Fogg, this biologist team works at the nexus of tourism and conservation, managing beach restoration, artificial reef deployment, invasive species control, sea turtle nesting protection, and land-based ecotourism.
Since 2019, the region has deployed 14 large vessels and thousands of tons of reef material, leading Florida in artificial reef activity. Their commitment continues with the SS United States transformation into the world’s largest artificial reef, and the plan for a supporting land-based museum, demonstrating a powerful integration of heritage, ecology, and public interpretation. Innovations like 3D-printed reef modules and interactive reef mapping tools ensure that marine science and preservation are accessible to divers, students, and citizens alike.
Their collaborative approach extends across sectors and generations. Students, nonprofits, private businesses, and research institutions all play roles in reef projects, lionfish removal tournaments, sea turtle patrols, and the planning of the 410-acre North Shoal River Preserve, which will include trails, wildlife viewing, paddling access, and public events. Collectively, these efforts make preservation a shared value, strengthening ecosystems, enriching heritage, and empowering the people of Northwest Florida to protect their maritime legacy.
