LACROSSE & FIELD HOCKEY
“If you build it, they will come.” That phrase made famous from the Hollywood blockbuster “Field of Dreams” could be applied to not only constructing a baseball field, but also building a new sports program. For about the first 10 years of their existence, the Red Raider Girls Lacrosse program enjoyed modest successes. However, beginning in the mid-2000’s a strong core of dedicated student-athletes emerged, which lifted the program to new heights. One of those gifted players was a hard working goalkeeper named Anna Berman.
Head Coach Greg Borchers quickly noticed her leadership skills as Berman earned the starting netminder job as a freshman. In her first two years, she helped the team to a pair of League I-B titles (2006 and 2007). Furthermore, the team was making significant strides towards competing for a Section I championship. As a senior, she led the Raiders to a 13-5 record and an appearance in the Section I semifinals.
Upon completing her career in 2010, Berman had accumulated 687 saves. She was named to the All-League and All-Section teams after each of her four seasons. She was also selected to the All-County team three times, and was twice named a US Lacrosse All-American (2009-10). In the summer months, she represented the Hudson Valley at the Empire State Games, and was a starting goalie at the prestigious Under Armour National Tournament.
Anna was also a four-year member of the Red Raider Field Hockey team. She grew into the team’s starting goalie after her first season.
Berman accepted a scholarship and played four years of lacrosse at UAlbany. She helped the Great Danes to two America East Conference Regular Season titles, and the 2012 Conference Tournament title. UAlbany also qualified for two NCAA Tournaments during her tenue. She was named the A-E All-Rookie team in 2011, and was selected to the All-America East team as a senior. She was also a member of the 2014 America East champion Field Hockey team at UAlbany.
Currently, Berman works as an EMT. For the past six seasons, she has served as a volunteer assistant coach for the Red Raiders Varsity Girls Lacrosse team. She is also involved with the Metro Lacrosse program. In her spare time, Berman enjoys hiking. She currently resides in Garnerville with her family.
