ANDREW McNAMARA
CLASS of 1997
ICE HOCKEY, SOCCER, LACROSSE
At a young age, Andrew picked up a hockey stick and started smacking objects around the kitchen and dining room floors in his parent’s Stony Point home. When he was old enough, and with his parents fearing noticeable damage to their household appliances, Andy was introduced to the ice when the pond froze in front of his “Pop-Pop” Tony’s house on Suffern Lane in Thiells. Andy and his father slowly created a small hockey rink as they spray painted lines, bent some pipes together for goals, and used bales of hay for boundaries. It was during these cold elementary school days that Andy and his friends took to the ice for memorable neighborhood hockey games.
McNamara developed his skate and stick skills, and his true love for hockey, when he began to participate in various youth leagues at Low Tor, Bear Mountain, West Point and Sport-O-Rama. His hard work paid off, and he was awarded a starting spot on the Varsity Ice Hockey team as a freshman. Following his second season under Head Coach Gary Dworkowitz, he had received Honorable Mention status on the All-League and All-Section teams. As a junior, he led the team in points with 39, and helped the Red Raiders to a 13-game win streak. North Rockland finished the 1995-96 season with a 16-3 record, and won the WRIHL League II title. “Andy Mac” was selected to the All-League, All-County and All-Section teams after the season.
Andrew continued his strong play as a senior, netting another 24 goals tallying 41 points. He concluded his four-year career with over 60 goals and 120 points. He was named the 1997 Section I League II MVP, and the 1997 WRKL/Shultz Ford “Athlete-of-the-Season.” Once again, Andrew earned a spot on the All-League, All-County and All-Section teams.
Andrew was a two-year varsity starter, and a key player for a League I-B Champion soccer team in 1995. Under Coach Fran Consagra, Andy and teammate Chris Dwyer anchored the defense. After his senior season, Andrew was named to the All-League, All-County and All-Section teams. He also played one year on the Varsity Lacrosse team, after playing a year of junior varsity baseball.
Following graduation, Andrew played one season of hockey at Iona College. During his time at Iona, the Gaels were transitioning from the ECAC DIII Conference to the MAAC. Andrew completed his studies in 2001 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications. For the past 10 years, he has been employed at Glencore LTD. in New York City. He is currently the head of the US Oil Operations in Manhattan. He and his wife Michelle now reside in Scarsdale. They both enjoy raising their children James (4) and Andrew (1). The elder Andrew now hopes that his children find a frozen pond soon.
