(IN ORDER BY WHICH WASHER LAST'S THE LONGEST)

Really quickly I would like to say this about my advice on which appliance is the right one to buy... May the man with the better warranty win. Find the appliance with the best warranty (Beware of Maytag's Fake 10 Year Warranty) .

Unfortunately all of our brands we used to know and love do not care about us anymore companies like whirlpool, kenmore, sears, samsung, LG, Amana, Roper and many more.

Direct Drive

The old washers. They have no lights and no digital displays, only a dial or two that twist by hand and have a big agitator in the middle that mixes the clothes as they wash.

ComBo Washers

Is a factory joined Washer and Dryer Unit that is All in One & cannot be separated.

These types of washers and dryers are more expensive than the the average. Combo Washers and Dryers are ideal for people who are limited on space.

Stackable / FRONT LOAD Washers

A Stackable Unit usually consists of one front load style washer and one matching dryer that are stacked on top of each other and connected together using a simple easy to install kit.

Tip: The washer goes on the bottom due to the weight of it.

This type of washer and dryer is the Front Load and a Front Load Dryer Style and are Ideal for anyone limited on space or someone who just wants the state of the art technology.

Portable or Mini Washers

Small washer is usually meant for an apartment or R.V.’s and can be easily moved and transported in a car or suv. Depending on how small you want to go...

Washer manufacturers make mini washers as little as the size of a hair brush or cheese burger and go up to as big as a dishwasher

Vertical Modular Washer (VMW)

Most Common Washer Machine Sold in America is the VMW. This type of washer has a distinct row of 6 lights below the main Control Knob.

THE LIGHTS ARE: Fill. Wash. Rinse. Spin. Done. Lid Locked..

These washer and dryers only have a 3-5 year life expectancy and are sometimes referred to as disposable washing machines and dryers

Which brings us to the next major milestone.

Error Codes.

What is an Error Code?

It's a very helpful "no experience needed" assistant!.

When there is an issue with your washer you should always check the codes first. These error codes make it so you don't have to guess or have experience which in return saves you so much time, energy, and not to mention "money" so you might as well use them!

Go here if your Washer gives you an error code or simply google it with the brand name and it will tell you exactly what's wrong with your washer machine.

All washing machines manufactured after 2013 are equipped with a self diagnostic mode that can tell you exactly what's wrong so you dont have to guess

Why does a washing machine lock it’s door?

A washer lid lock, lock the washers door as a safety feature for children. In fact it’s by law they are required to install them if the washer they sell doesn't have a brake system to slow the drum down on the inside.

In the old days people were occasionally scalped or dismembered while doing the laundry because of loose hair or clothing that happened to get caught in some moving washing machine part.

All that blood was difficult to clean off clothing, so something had to be done.

One of the many “benefits” of our overly aggressive legal system is that safety devices such as lid locks have been enforced on all appliances allowing you to safely use your washing machine without the fear of having something you love ripped off or a loved one disfigured.

How a Washing Machine Door Lock Operates

The lid lock door lock latch secures the washer door shut during operation. Once the washer door is closed, it can begin operating. If the washer door is not latched shut, the door switch will prevent the washer from operating. If the door lid lock latch is defective, the washer will not spin or start.

The washer lid lock latch can fail either mechanically or electrically. Inspect the door latch for damage. If the door lid lock latch is damaged, buzzes or does not close properly, replace it.

To determine if the door latch has failed internally use a multimeter to test door latch.

Many of the complaints regarding the Amana Washer washing machines are about the lid lock. Some people have said they hate needing to wait for the lid to unlock to add a few more clothes.

Thank you Whirlpool for forcing us to practice some much needed patience in this “I want it yesterday” world. While this is slightly inconvenient and most people have enough common sense to not reach into a moving washer tub that has the ability to rip your arm off, some don’t, and we want them to keep their hands too.

The lid lock on Amana Washer

washing machines is a two-part mechanism. It has a magnetic switch that senses when the lid is in the closed position; it also has a locking tab that must be extended in the locked position to allow the washer to continue with any of its washing functions.

The lid lock is responsible for three possible error codes:

  1. “dU” (Door/Lid cannot unlock),

  2. “dL” (Door/Lid cannot lock)

  3. “lid”(Lid Opened)

The lid lock can be checked for resistance in its various states with a voltmeter at the washing machine control board.

For more detailed information about door lock related error codes and diagnostic testing procedures click on the error code link. Need help with a washer lid light flashing? Please leave your questions below and we will be happy to assist you in repairing your washing machine.

IMPORTANT:

Never change the washing machine settings once the washer has already started any wash cycle, as this can cause the lid lock light to flash. We have seen this happen on Whirlpool, Kitchenaid, Maytag, Amana, and Kenmore Top Loading Washing Machines.

How do I reset my washer?

There is not a reset besides a hard reset of unplugging the washer for 30 seconds but there is a recalibration mode that programs the washing machine back to the factory settings it was installed with. It is recommended to run this calibration mode every time you work on, install, or relocate the washer.

IMPORTANT:

Washing machine lid lock light will flash if another issue besides the lid is detected.

Will this fix my washer?

These lid lock problems, reasons, causes, bypasses and repairs are for Whirlpool, Kitchenaid, Maytag, Amana, Roper, Kirkland, Elimentor and Kenmore Top Loading Washing Machines.

Try these quick fix tips before going through all the causes and fixes for lid light flashing:

  1. Unplug the washer for 1 minute and this may reset the washer and clear the flashing light.

  2. Press and hold the “END OF CYCLE / CYCLE SIGNAL” button(s) for 20 seconds and this may reset the washer and clear the flashing light.

Common Question: Lid Lock Light Flashing or Blinking On Top Load Washing Machine How To Clear

I have an older Kenmore top loading washing machine. I did some Google searching and found that there could be a few different issues that are causing the lid lock light to flash or blink on the control panel of my washer.

I do not know where to start.

Can you assist me in fixing my washer by getting the lid light to stop blinking?

What can cause the lid lock light to flash on my top load washing machine?

Check Lid Lock Striker and Lid Lock

  1. Lock striker that presses down on the lid switch may be out of alignment.

  1. A piece of lint or washing machine detergent has built up over time and hinders the locking of the lid.

  1. The control board sees an open lid switch when it attempts to lock.

  1. The lid switch is not working either mechanically or electrically and needs to be adjusted or replaced.

  1. The control board is faulty and is unable to detect if the lid lock is locked.

  1. Actuator motor is faulty or has loose wiring (If washer is VMW = Vertical Modular Washer). Lid lock light will flash if lid lock does not move into the locked position.

  1. Lid lock light will flash if the washer motor cannot be powered on.

  1. Lid lock light will flash if not closed completely if something is blocking the lid.

  1. Lid lock will flash if the shift actuator goes bad

  1. Lid Lock will flash if there is water left in washing machine

How do you bypass the Maytag Centennial lid lock?

The process of defeating a Maytag washer door lid lock is easy, but complicated at the same time.. Here's a video that bypasses the lid lock and explains how the lid lock works. Washing machines now have lid locks due to government regulations because of manufacturers doing away with the old style of washers that were installed with a brake system that slowed and stopped the tub when the door was opened.

Unlike the old lid switches lid locks are a bit trickier to bypass. This lid lock bypass is good for whirlpool, kenmore, roper, amana, kirkland, crosley and many other washers.

What If A New Lid Lock Doesn’t Fix My Flashing Light Problem?

  1. Try a master reset by unplugging the washer for 30 seconds. Then recalibrate it.

  1. Check the main control board and shift actuator.

  1. Unplug each connector on the control board and shift actuator one by one and then replug them back in.

Reconnect each plug as you go so you do not get mixed up wiring.

This may reset the washer and clear the flashing lid lock light. When attempting this, make sure power is off to the washer.

What Else Can I Do to Fix My Lid Lock Right Now!??

This trick works for Defeating Amana Washer Lid Locks , Kenmore Washer lid locks, Roper Washer lid lock, Whirlpool Washer lid lock, and Maytag Washer lid lock that have a locking door lid lock switch.

  1. Be sure lid lock and lid striker are clean as lint or detergent buildup can block the switch and cause the flashing light.

  1. Be sure the lid lock and lid striker are aligned and secure as they can become loose from years of vibration or slamming the washer lid shut.

  1. Check to make sure the lid lock and lid striker are making contact with each other when the washing machine lid shuts, if not the lid lock light will flash.

  1. Check the wire connections from the lid switch to the main control panel as it may have become loose or the wires may be damaged.

  1. If all checks out, be sure the lid switch is working properly (mechanically and electrically) if necessary replace it.

  1. Check the Shift Actuator to be sure it is not faulty or has loose wiring. This wikll cause your lid lock light to just blink. (If the washer is a VMW = Vertical Modular Washer).

Flashing Lid Lock Light: How to Troubleshoot

  • Error Codes on Your Top Load Washer. Learn How to Read a Vertical Modular Washer (VMW) Error Code Display

  • Diagnostic Test Mode:If you have a newer washing machine that has a digital display:

  1. The DL error code means you have a door lock error. A door lock error will happen if the washer door cannot be unlocked.

  1. The washer main control board will try to lock the lid 6 times before the error code shows.

Inspect your washing machine for these problems when you get the DL error…

  • Check the door lock assembly to see if it is faulty, loose or damaged.

  • Check the door lock and switch assembly for objects that may be blocking it.

  • Check the wire harness connections to the door lock and switch assembly and main control board.

  • Check the door Lock/Switch Assembly Failure

This washer repair guide gives you step-by-step instructions for replacing the lid switch or also known as lid lock assembly on a top-load washer.

The lid lock has a switch that detects whether the washer lid is open—if the lid is open, the washer won’t start.

The washing machine's door lock purpose is to keep the lid closed during the wash cycle.

If the washers lid switch or a.k.a. washer lid lock doesn’t work, or maybe your lid lock light flashes, the washer lid lock might need to be bypassed or replaced.
