Description: Demolition of more than 50% of the roof at a Contributing rated, single-story building.
Staff Recommendations:
FEMA survey research estimates 8226 Green Street was constructed from 1885-1895. However, the building is not shown on the 1896 Fire Insurance Maps. The building first appears on the 1909 Fire Insurance Maps as a rectangular single shotgun. By 1951, the building had received a small addition to the side of the house at the rear. This addition appears to have been further expanded in the latter part of the 20th century and utilized the existing right side roof slope as evidenced by the image shown below from Pictometry.
8226 retains its original massing, center front entry and roof line. The proposed side addition is just proud of two rooms back which is an approvable condition in full control districts. The proposed addition demolition is 71.7%. Staff worked with the applicant to reduce the width of the addition to be roughly half the size of the width of the current single shotgun and to retain the front entry sequence. Even though the roof demolition is over 50% HDLC Staff considers this one-story addition to be a more sympathetic addition than a camelback at this single shotgun building. For the aforementioned reasons Staff recommends approval of the demolition of more than 50% of the roof structure.
