Sadly, my program outputs many of this file's textures incorrectly. This file contains a large number of common level objects, including the Ideya Palace, Brand New Dreams Ideya Captures, the Ideya themselves, the speed booster, spinning switch object, all power panels, an assortment of arrows for Claris and Elliot (the textures pictured are probably wrong), sprites for the orange, yellow, and stunt rings, and sprites for the timer on the HUD. The blue chip cage is also present; however, it is extremely small for some reason.
Contains sprites for blue chips and gold chips, and textures for Ideya Captures.
This basically has the same items as DITEM_COM_PS2.BIN, but lower poly for Saturn Dreams. However, it does not appear to have the wing-shaped object or the Ideya Captures. It also has another size of blue chip cages and an odd Ideya Palace-like object with only 3 pillars. A look at the texture data proves that it bears an early design for the Ideya Palace, with similar blue and yellow textures but no colored circles for the Ideya themselves.
Some stage objects and graphics from Gillwing's boss arena in Brand New Dreams.
Some stage objects and graphics from Gillwing's boss arena in Saturn Dreams.
Graphics and objects for the Brand New Dreams version of Spring Valley. These include two sets of four bumpy objects, a number of rocks and waterfalls, a floating windmill, and a rainbow.
Graphics and objects for the Saturn Dreams version of Spring Valley. Contains a similar array of objects to the ones seen above.
Some stage objects and graphics from Puffy's boss arena in Brand New Dreams. This stage is overflowing with interesting and unique objects, including the infamous hidden object that falls out of a closet after beating the boss. Credit to KetrinDarkDragon for creating the render of this object. Curiously, the object's mask appears to have a grey texture rather than the skin tone seen in-game. The flower object was rendered by jpeg. Also, a look at the boss room reveals that it is nearly circular. Finally, KetrinDarkDragon discovered that among the textures in the file was an odd painting seeming to depict nude women. This painting is used in-game, but it is turned to the side, making the subject less obvious. Again, all of these assets are only a fraction of what can be found in DITEM_ST2_MARE_PS2.BIN.
Some stage objects and graphics from Puffy's boss arena in Saturn Dreams. These are a similar array of objects to those found in DITEM_ST2_MARE_PS2.BIN
The graphics in this file would not output correctly. Contains objects for Splash Garden, including the clock, several walls, some spheres of water (including one dimpled one), and the fountains.
Contains objects for Saturn Dreams Splash Garden. My program was able to output this one's textures correctly, revealing an interesting skybox with a different scene on the floor and ceiling. Otherwise, this is much the same as the previous file.
Some stage objects and graphics from Gulpo's boss arena in Brand New Dreams. Among them are a dented and very large spherical object, the curtain of water involved in the boss fight, and four poses of the fish that shoot NiGHTS through the water.
Some stage objects and graphics from Gulpo's boss arena in Saturn Dreams.
Contains objects from Mystic Forest, including a number of trees, the floating blue blocks, road signs, the crushing cave ceiling, and the red car that can be found in the level. Some of the signs have a "Twin Seeds" logo.
Contains objects from Saturn Dreams Mystic Forest.
Objects and graphics from Clawz' boss arena in Brand New Dreams. Oddly, the ring that the firecracker mice stand on seems to be stored at an extremely small size.
Objects and graphics from Clawz' boss arena in Saturn Dreams.
Objects from Frozen Bell in Brand New Dreams. Several of the objects appear to be parts of the sled track for mare 4. Others include signs, train tracks, and the train itself, which has a "Twin Seeds" logo.
Objects from Frozen Bell in Saturn Dreams. Includes a similar array of objects to those found in the above file.
Objects and textures from Jackle's boss fight in Brand New Dreams. This includes a single tarot card, which is the only one Jackle uses in the fight and is clearly spliced together from card sprites used for Saturn Dreams. (Visible where the leftmost bolt of lightning changes from yellow to green).
Objects and textures from Jackle's boss fight in Saturn Dreams. The model data seems to be formatted in a slightly different way than I've seen in other files, and my program doesn't extract them correctly. What can be seen, however, are 5 additional tarot card designs that are totally unused except as cameos in the game's hint about Jackle.
The fact that these designs can be seen in the old Saturn hints as well makes me suspect that they have been present and unused since the beginning.
However, these card sprites do not appear to be the Saturn originals. Maresuke on www.nightsintodreams.com used an emulator to extract the card texture from the original Saturn game and found this:
This card texture is slightly shorter in length than either of the remaster's versions. In fact, the remaster's card textures have occasional rows of duplicated pixels leading to this difference. Also, both sides of the card have much higher color depth than the remaster's. The front side has 188 colors and the back side has 126, while the remaster's versions of the same card sides have less than 32 colors each. This difference is clear in the leftmost lightning bolt, which is here fully yellow. Perhaps the developers felt the need to compress the original Saturn textures to avoid taking up too much of the PS2 disc the remaster was designed for.
Objects and graphics for Soft Museum in Brand New Dreams. Among the many objects in this level is a statue texture that seems to map correctly to the bust that can be seen in different places throughout the stage. It does seem to be used for the plaque under the bust, but the statue itself has a mirror effect instead of a texture in-game. The plaque which is used for the other sculptures can also be found in the data, making it easier to see that it amusingly reads:
I am a sculpt
Huvenjie (?)
2007.06.07
This date, whether it is year/month/day or year/day/month, is several months before the PS2 version's release date.
DiGi Valentine clarified that the name on this plaque looks like "Huarenjie" which means "Chinatown" in Chinese. This, he noted, is fitting because the PS2 remaster was developed in a Chinese studio.
Contains objects and textures for Soft Museum in Saturn Dreams. Sadly, the textures contain neither of the above two oddities. Otherwise, the objects are pretty much similar.
Objects and textures from Reala's boss fight in Brand New Dreams. It includes the mountains in the boss arena in their full glory, as well as a floating plane to display Reala's seal and the throne in the middle of the room. It also includes the three floating rocks that Reala breaks as he gets hit.
Objects and textures from Reala's boss fight in Saturn Dreams. All of the assets are essentially the same as those found above.
DITEM_ST6_MARE_PS2.BIN and DITEM_ST6_MARE_SS.BIN both have versions of the red graphic which is displayed on the ceiling of Reala's boss fight. However, the corresponding graphic discovered in the Saturn version by Maresuke on www.nightsintodreams.com is not the same as those used in the remaster. Below is a comparison of the three (left = Brand New Dreams, center = remastered Saturn Dreams, right = original Saturn version).
Both of the remaster's versions of Reala's seal appear somewhat warped compared to the original, widening Reala's face. They also completely lack the yellow lights around the rim of the latter, which are meant to blink on and off during the boss fight. This is likely the result of a wider issue preventing the game from changing the texture on a model once it has been assigned in the model data, which is the reason for unusual measures such as an additional "mask" model for Elliot and Claris to show them with closed eyes.
The Brand New Dreams version of the symbol appears to have been smoothed over from the more jagged version used in Saturn Dreams, perhaps an attempt to hide the flaws that resulted from warping the original image.
A bunch of objects and their textures from Stick Canyon. There's nothing out of the ordinary, just plenty of roller coaster rails and pieces of the tower.
Objects from Saturn Dreams Stick Canyon. Again, nothing out of the ordinary.
Objects and textures from Wizeman's boss fight in Brand New Dreams. These include the shiny shield that surrounds Wizeman and models and textures for each of his different attacks.
Objects and textures from Wizeman's boss fight in Saturn Dreams. These are similar to the ones seen above. However, the Saturn Dreams textures are split into many small blocks, resulting in there being more than 600 of them in total. One difference, however, is that there are a large number of wavy-looking sprites that are used for Wizeman's shield when both NiGHTS are touching him. Interestingly, it seems to flash in all the colors of the Ideya. The PS2 version uses a similar effect, but with a different graphic which is more or less rainbow.
Objects from Twin Seeds in Brand New Dreams. This has a bunch of buildings, and a few platforms from the opening cutscene. Wizeman's shield is also present in the file, likely the shield that surrounds NiGHTS at the start of the level.
Objects from Twin Seeds in Saturn Dreams. Pretty much similar to the above.
Objects from Christmas Gillwing's boss fight. It has similar objects to those in normal Gillwing's boss fight.
Objects from Christmas Spring Valley. This includes all of the "common" objects that have been modified for this stage, such as the Ideya Palace Cake and the tree. Some of the textures here aren't quite right but you get the idea.
DREPLAY.BIN: This file does not seem to contain any model or texture data.
DST files: These have texture tiles for the stages themselves.
DST01_PIA.BIN
DST02_PIA.BIN
DST03_PIA.BIN
DST04_PIA.BIN
DST05_PIA.BIN
DST06_PIA.BIN
DST07_PIA.BIN
Out of the above files, only DST03_PIA.BIN has data that my program can read. This data comprises a couple of models for the bouncy vines in Mystic Forest in Saturn Dreams.
DST01_PIA_GRDSS.BIN
DST02_PIA_GRDSS.BIN
DST03_PIA_GRDSS.BIN
DST04_PIA_GRDSS.BIN
DST05_PIA_GRDSS.BIN
DST06_PIA_GRDSS.BIN
All of these contain hundreds of small texture tiles for the Saturn Dreams versions of their stages.
DST02_PIA_GRDPS2.BIN
Contains a single texture of the purple void, presumably used in Brand New Dreams.
Contains a single 64x64 image which is pure white with varying amounts of alpha. Due to my limited knowledge of image formats, I haven't been able to render this image with its proper transparency.
