It is our hope that all of our officials wish to continue to develop their skills and be good stewards of the game. One way to do this is through the use of "observations". Observations are often perceived as a negative experience where in fact, they should be looked at as a positive one. Through the use of observations, NHSOA is able to see how our officials are developing and what areas we as an association need to focus our training on. Referee Mentors/Observers are there to provide you with feedback and areas to develop. This is no different than the high school coaches we see providing feedback to their players.
We highly encourage our officials to request an observation from the Director of Assessment annually. When this happens, one of your peers will be assigned to "observe" your match and provide you with feedback to further develop your skills as an official. Areas that are often discussed are positioning, foul recognition, game management, appropriate use of misconduct, and teamwork.
NOTHING! This service is covered by the association in hopes that more officials wish to receive observations.
Officials who receive an observation will receive not only verbal feedback during and/or after the game in which they are being observed, they will also receive written feedback from the Referee Coach/Mentor/Observer highlighting the official's strengths and one or two areas to continue to develop going forward.
Additionally, this allows the Executive Board to have a more accurate picture of our officials and allows us to rank our officials appropriately. For example, if you as an official don't feel that you are being challenged by the assignments you are receiving, an observation will allow us to get written feedback that can be sent to the assignor who would be able to work with the official to receive assignments that will assist the official in their pursuit of growth.
