KidTether Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 1, 2026
KidTether is published by NGN Consulting Corp. ("we," "us"). This policy explains what KidTether does and does not do with information on your device. It's written to match, word for word where it overlaps, the in-app Accessibility disclosure and the Play Console Data Safety declaration.
The short version
KidTether does not collect or transmit any personal information about you or your child, and we never receive any. Everything the app needs - the allowed-app list, your PIN, the exit-attempt log - is stored only on your device. The one exception is Google Play's own purchase flow for the one-time unlock, which is between you and Google, not something KidTether adds.
What KidTether stores, and where
Everything below lives only in local, on-device storage. None of it is uploaded, synced, backed up to a server, or made available to us in any form.
- Your PIN. Stored as a salted cryptographic hash in an Android Keystore-backed encrypted store. We cannot see, recover, or reset your PIN - nobody can, including us.
- The allowed-app list. Which app (Toddler Kiosk) or apps (Kid Grid) you've chosen, stored in a local database.
- The exit-attempt log. Timestamps and outcomes ("Exited" / "Wrong PIN") of attempts to leave Kid Mode. No content, no screenshots - just the time and the outcome. You can clear this log at any time from within the app.
- Your appearance and setup preferences. Which skin you've chosen, whether you follow the system theme, whether onboarding is complete, and, only if you choose to enter one, a first name or nickname for the Kid Grid greeting.
- Photos for the built-in Photo Viewer. If you choose specific photos for your child to look at, we copy those photos into KidTether's own private storage on your device - this is what lets the Photo Viewer work without needing broad access to your whole photo library. You pick them using Android's own photo picker, which never gives KidTether a general "browse all your photos" permission. Deleting a photo from KidTether's picker removes only this private copy; the original in your gallery is never touched, either way.
The Accessibility service
This is the same explanation KidTether shows you in the app before it asks for this permission: "KidTether uses Android's Accessibility service for one job only: while Kid Mode is turned on, it watches which app is in front and brings your child back to the app(s) you chose if they leave it - for example, by pressing Home or opening Settings."
- What it reads: only which app is in front (its package name) and the type of window that just opened, from Android's window-change events. The window type is used only to tell KidTether's own screens apart from each other. It cannot read what's on your screen or what you type.
- What it does with that: compares the foreground package name against the allow-list stored on your device, and redirects back to an allowed app if there's a mismatch. To do that it can also close the notification panel or press Back, the same as you would, if your child pulls one of Android's system panels open during Kid Mode. All of this happens entirely on-device.
- What it never does: it doesn't record what you do in other apps, doesn't act on your behalf in any other app, and this service itself makes no network request of any kind. Nothing it reads or does is ever sent anywhere.
- Turning it off: you can disable this permission at any time in Android Settings -> Accessibility -> KidTether. Kid Mode needs it to keep your child in the chosen app(s), so KidTether won't start Kid Mode while it's off.
The one thing that does use the network
KidTether is a one-time purchase ($6.99 after a 3-day free trial). Starting the trial is pure local date math - it doesn't touch the network or ask for payment details. Buying the app, or restoring a previous purchase, is handled entirely by Google Play Billing: your payment details go to Google, under Google's own privacy policy, not to us. KidTether's own code never receives, sees, or stores your payment information - only a confirmed / not-confirmed result for whether the purchase went through.
This is the only network activity anywhere in KidTether. There is no analytics SDK, no advertising SDK, no crash-reporting SDK, and no backend server of any kind. KidTether does not access the advertising ID or any hardware identifier (such as IMEI, serial number, or MAC address).
What we don't do
- We don't require an account, a sign-in, or an email address to use KidTether.
- We don't share, sell, or transmit any data to third parties - we don't have any data to share, since none of it leaves your device in the first place.
- We don't track your child's location, messages, browsing, or screen time. That's a different category of product; KidTether contains which apps are reachable, and nothing more.
- We don't use the Accessibility service, or any other permission, for advertising or analytics purposes.
Children's privacy
KidTether is designed to be set up and operated by a parent or guardian - the buyer and the person who configures Kid Mode is an adult. KidTether does not knowingly collect personal information from children, and by design has no mechanism to do so: there is no account creation, no data entry screen visible in Kid Mode, and no data of any kind leaves the device.
The one piece of information about a child the app can hold is the optional first name or nickname a parent may enter for the Kid Grid greeting. It's entered by the parent, not the child, is stored only on the parent's device, and is never uploaded, shared, or accessible to us. You can change or clear it at any time in the app's settings.
Permissions KidTether requests, and why
- Accessibility service - see above; the enforcement mechanism that returns the child to an allowed app.
- Display over other apps - shows the small lock in the top-left corner that you press and hold to reach the PIN screen while an allowed app is in the foreground.
- Query all installed apps - lets the setup screen show you a list of your installed apps to choose from as the allowed app(s). This list is read on-device only, to populate that picker; it is not transmitted anywhere.
- Post notifications - for the "Kid Mode is active" and "Kid Mode protection is off" alerts, both generated and shown entirely on-device.
- Billing, internet, and network state - required by the Google Play Billing library to process the one-time purchase described above. These are the only permissions on this list that touch the network, and only for that one purpose.
Data retention and deletion
Because nothing leaves your device, deleting data is entirely in your control:
- Clear the exit-attempt log at any time from the Exit Attempts screen.
- Remove any Photo Viewer photo at any time from the "Manage photos" screen.
- Uninstalling KidTether removes the PIN, the allowed-app list, the exit log, the Photo Viewer's photo copies, and all preferences from your device, the same as uninstalling any Android app.
If you're in the EU, UK, or a similar jurisdiction
Because KidTether keeps everything on your device, we don't hold any personal data about you. Where data protection law still applies:
- Legal basis. Processing your purchase through Google Play is necessary to perform our agreement with you (the one-time unlock). Keeping the exit-attempt log on your device is in our and your legitimate interest in a working parental lock, and it never leaves the device.
- Your rights. You have rights to access, correct, erase, and port your data, and to object to or restrict its processing. Since the data is only on your device, you can exercise these directly: view it in the app, change it in the app, clear the exit log or photos, or uninstall the app to erase everything. You can also contact us, or your local data protection authority.
- Purchases. Payment data is handled by Google as an independent controller under Google's Privacy Policy (https://policies.google.com/privacy), including any international transfer it involves.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, we'll update the "Last updated" date above and describe what changed here. If we make a material change to how KidTether handles data, we'll tell you in the app before the change takes effect.
