Jersey. Radon gas is an odorless, colorless, 

radioactive gas that originates from soil and 

rock formations and has been linked with lung 

cancer. The New Jersey Department of 

Environmental Protection advises all homes be 

tested to ensure against dangerous levels of 

radon gas. As many as 1 in 4 residences in New 

Jersey may have levels that exceed the DEP 

guidelines. Generally, radon gas can be easily 

controlled by a mitigation system that is 

installed by a licensed radon contractor, the 

cost of which is usually a negotiable item during 

the sale of a home.
