Beek Netherlands / Germany
Part of the small village of Beek belonged to Germany until 1949. Beek lies on the northern slope of the Wylerberg, on the strategically important road for the Allies from Nijmegen via Kranenburg to Kleve.
As part of Operation Market Garden, fierce house-to-house fighting took place in Beek from 18 September 1944 in the town centre and around the well-known Hotel Spijkerhof.
On 21 September 1944, a reconnaissance unit of the Allied forces crossed the German border for the first time. Soldiers from the Sherwood Rangers (UK) and the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment (US) approach the village of Beek on a British M3 Stuart tank. The event is shown here in a re-enacted scene.

A Canadian tank crosses the border to Germany in Beek. Road sign "Kleve 19 km - Nijmegen 5 km". The Wylerberg house, which belonged to a distant aunt of Hermann Göring, is also shown. It is located on the northern slope of the Duivelsberg, known in military jargon as Devils Hill or Hill 75.9.

Pathe war correspondent Kenneth Gordon was one of the first reporters to cross the border into Germany in Beek. During a visit to London, he reports on his impressions. The video shows a Stuart M3 light armoured vehicle of the Sherwood Rangers, with the Gemeentehuis Beek in the background.
