Wildflower Walk with Grace Bartlett
Celebrate the debut of spring on a wildflower walk with Friends of Sears Island and program leader Grace Bartlett, on Friday, May 5th from 10:00am-12:00pm. Like other species, wildflowers go through a cycle of life. We will look for seed pods and other remnants of last year's flowers, as well as the earliest spring wildflowers such as Canada mayflowers, trillium, and skunk cabbage. We will also explore the unique ways flowers attract pollinators, thus producing the next generation of flowers. Grace Bartlett is a Maine Master Naturalist, who is naturally curious about all things outdoors. She is especially interested in studying and photographing the Lilliputian world of lichens and mosses.

Grace began the walk by inviting everyone to participate and make this a group endeavor. We would use everyone's eyes to look at wildflowers, trees, remnants of flowers and evidence of pollination. We would see crosiers of ferns as their new growth begins and use a key to attempt identification.

The pussy willows of Salix bebbiana or long-beaked willow were flowering and we discussed that they are monoecious plants , i.e. only one type of flower is on the plant We were looking at a male flower that is producing pollen on its stamens. Other plants had female flowers that would be fertilized and seeds would develop.

The whitish velvety coating on lower stems and fiddle heads indicates that this is cinnamon fern.
