The Maine Woods Initiative: the history, development and management objectives of 70,000 acres of AMC land in northern Maine with Steve Tatko, Land Manager for MWI

Date: Thursday, April 6, 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm at Bangor Public Library

As AMC's most ambitious conservation project, the Maine Woods Initiative has afforded the club with a tremendous opportunity to practice what it preaches at a landscape scale in one of the most important conservation regions in Maine. Combining sustainable forestry, world-class recreational facilities and trails, and ecological restoration, AMC has been pioneering a new model of conservation ownership in Maine. With a land base of 70,000 acres or about 100 square miles, AMC's Land Manager will reflect on the first decade of AMC's ownership and what lies ahead. Steve Tatko was born and raised in Willimantic, ME to a fifth generation slate mining family. At a young age he started working for the family business and gained firsthand experience with logging, road building, and business management skills. He was also a history major and became a Registered Maine Forester. He has worked for AMC since 2012.

Founded in 1876, the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) promotes the protection, enjoyment, and understanding of the mountains, forests, waters, and trails of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions. Through its Maine Woods Initiative AMC has permanently conserved 70,000 acres of forestland, created over 120 miles of recreational trails, opened three sporting camps to the public, established an FSC-certified sustainable forestry operation, and developed a partnership with local Piscataquis County schools. [BANGOR, Maine] The Forest Society of Maine has teamed up with the Appalachian Mountain Club and the Open Space Institute to acquire and conserve 4,358 acres of forestland surrounding Silver Lake and 12 miles of the West Branch of the Pleasant River in Piscataquis County, Maine. These lands are visited each year by thousands of people from Maine and afar for fishing, hiking, camping, paddling, hunting, snowmobiling, and more. The property’s popular campsites and access to the river and lake are part of the amenities important to the region’s recreational and tourism economies. Public recreational access is now guaranteed forever.

The project safeguards vital river habitat for Eastern brook trout and Atlantic salmon spawning, and habitat for American black duck, Canada lynx, Northern long-eared bat, wood turtle, bald eagle, and many other species of state and national significance. The project additionally protects a 400-acre mature silver maple flood plain forest—one of the largest and best examples in Maine.

Through the Maine Woods Initiative (MWI) AMC has permanently conserved 70,000 acres of forestland, including 22,000 acres of ecological reserve. Together with adjacent lands this creates a 60-mile conservation corridor from Moosehead Lake to Baxter State Park, comprising nearly 650,000 contiguous acres of conservation land open to public recreational use. AMC's lands are held under multiple conservation easements with the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands and The Nature Conservancy, and are managed for recreation, ecological protection, sustainable forestry and scientific research.
