Lynn began the workshop with a hands on activity making plaster casts of animal tracks. She had a collection of latex animal feet. We mixed plaster of paris in water until it had the consistency of a thick milkshake. Then a foot was pushed into the plaster and left to dry. We were making a print which is an impression made by one foot.

Lynn's presentation: "Stories in the Snow." The first step in tracking is to count the toes in the print. Canines, felines and hares have 4 toes. Then analyze the pattern of the tracks made by the prints. The track can be a straight line which is used by canines, felines and hoofed animals. The track can be evenly spaced bunches of prints made by members of the Weasel family. The tracks can be 2 small prints and 2 large prints made by squirrels, hares and mice. Raccoons, bears, skunks, and porcupines make a wide track in a zig zag pattern.

Measure the Straddle or Trail Width. Measure the Stride which is the distance between prints of a walking or bounding animal (toe to toe distance). Then you can use a track Finder Key to determine what animal has made the tracks.

Lynn had her collection of mammal models which provided an opportunity for mammal identification. And she brought along selections from her library. The mammal feet could also be used with a stamp pad to make mammal prints.
