S'Klallam

S'Klallam - Clallam

While the Skagit occupied the land in and around Penn's Cove, they did not have settlements on the relatively steep western shoreline of Whidbey Island, which sources suggest was claimed by the S'Klallam tribe of the Olympic Peninsula. The S'Klallam were expanding their territories at the time of European contact, and in 1840 they seized the western side of Ebey's Prairie for potato cropping.

Of the S'Klallam settlement, most sources imply that there were no permanent settlements in this area. Instead, they depict the settlements as encampments that were of enduring use to potato harvesters, hunters and groups traveling from the open waters of the Puget Sound and Strait of Juan de Fuca.
