Sandy Point

Sandy Point - Tseht-skluhks

Tseht-skluhks (ragged nose) was located at Sandy Point, east of downtown Langley. This village had a potlatch house and clam beds which drew visitors from as far away as the Samish tribe. Captain George Vancouver noted in his journals that Master Joseph Whidbey (Whidbey Island namesake) saw over two hundred people at this location during their visit in 1792.

Chief William Shelton was born at Sandy Point, Whidbey Island on July 4 1868. At the age of 18, Shelton left his home to attend the Tulalip mission school where he learned to be a millwright and carpenter. Shelton was known as one of the last of the totem pole carvers in this area.
