The town of Preveza

Preveza is a town situated in the region of Epirus, in the North-West of Greece founded at the end of the 14th century. Today it's a very touristic place. The tourists come here to discover the incredible buildings, the beautiful typical Greek landscapes and the Greek traditions.

Ancient Greek Traces

Ancient greek pottery

The ancient greek potery, which gives us a lot information about ancient greek mythology, for example about daily life. It's decorated with geometric patterns such as triangles and meanders.

Later they used two rythms called: melanomorfoys, when the figures are black and erythomorfous when the figures are ceramic.

On one of the first days in Greece, we had a pottery workshop, where we drawed a pot together. It was very fun and I think it was a good way to get to know each other.

Nicopolis

Nikopoli is an archeological site, which is located near Preveza. It was buildt in 29 b.c. by Octavian Augustus. He built the Nikopoli to memorise his win against Cleopatra and Anthony, in the naval battle of Actium. the word Nikopoli means in Greek the city of victory (niki = victory and poli = city). Nikopoli has an odeum, walls to protect the city, a Roman aqueduct, a theater and a stadium.

We liked the history about Odeum, and we learned that the Romans took the idea about the theatre from Greece. It was a very nice place!

The battle of Actium

The battle of Actium was in 31 BC a battle between Cleopatra and Antony against Octave, later called Augustus, it happened in the Ionian sea, near Actium in Greece.

Octave won and two years later he founded a city to remember his victory : the city of Nicopolis. This fight was the decisive confrontation of the Final War of the Roman Republic. The winer would dominate the roman empire.

The archeological museum of Nikopolis

It has mainly exhibits about foundings of Nikopoli : it has statues, coins, mosaics and pots.

The ancient Greek in Nikopoli used to put the dead bodies in sarcophagus, when you look at the sarcophagus you can see if the dead person was rich or poor.

We think it was interesting that all the things at the museum were the original things from Ancient Nicopoli, and some not copies.

Roman traces

The Roman Aqueduct of Ancient Nicopolis

Near the village of Agios Georgios, in the Epirus region, we can find this beautiful Roman Aqueduct wich was build by Octavian Augustus at the end of the first century BC. It was used to transport water to the ancient town of Nicopolis.

Kassopi

Kassopi was an ancient Greek city in the Epirus region between the 4th to the end of the 1st cent. BC. It's situated on a high platform overlooking the sea, next to the Zalango mountain.

The first settlements of the site are from the Paleolithic but was founded in the middle of the 4th cent. BC. The city was finished in the 3rd cent. BC and had his own money.

It was destroyed in 168-167 BC by roman forces, and the city was abandoned in 31BC. The inhabitants moved to the new capital of the region, Nikopolis.

Today, we can visit this archaeological site to see the theaters, the buildings and the excelent view.

religion

The people in Greece are mostly Orthodox. We sow different churches in and around Preveza. We also went to the monastery of St Demetrios in Zaloggo, wich is located in the mountains, near Kassopi. It was very impressive and beautiful.
