Group leaders: Adam CSANK & Margot KAYE
Main objectives:
Modern chronologies from Timiskaming region
Description: Group dedicated to the chronology building process from living trees. You will see all steps, including sampling, sample preparation, crossdating, chronology building and interpretation.
Skills you will acquire:
Coring
Core processing
Cross-dating
Chronology building and validation
Group leaders: Andria DAWSON
Main objectives: Analysis and modelling of tree-ring data based on detailed inventory plots
Description: Group focused on large tree-ring database handling to model tree responses over time and space. The participants will use detailed forest inventory and tree-ring data combined with other ecological data to develop a model representing the main drivers of forest dynamics. The R environment will be used.
Most data used come from:

Main objectives:
Dendroecology of SAFE experimental plots (fire and silvicultural chronosequence)
Description: Group dedicated to the measuring and description of multiple attributes of boreal mixed forests subjected to different sylvicultural treatments: biodiversity, biomass increments at the tree and stand scale, temporal variability of biomass increments, impact of climate and insect epidemics on forest productivity.
At the FERLD we have a well established chronosequence of forest plots at different time since fire and sylvicultural treatments (SAFE experiment). The data will be collected on the SAFE plots and associated control plots and analyzed in the lab.

Analysis of wood biomass increments over time (responses to logging and insect outbreaks)

Main objectives: Development and interpretation of dendroanatomical chronologies from the cedar trees of Duparquet lake
Description: This group will operate in coordination with the dendroclimatology group and will be dedicated to the development and interpretation of chronologies of anatomical traits from the famous cedar trees of Duparquet lake:
The chronologies will be used to analyze the climate imprint on the cedars and develop climate reconstructions.
Skills you will acquire:
Sample preparation for microtomy and microscopy
Measurement of tracheid’s traits
Ecophysiological and climatic interpretations

Main objectives: Past forest disturbance history from the Timiskaming region
Description: Group dedicated to reconstructing past disturbance histories (fire and historical logging) using fire scars on trees and subfossil logs which are tree remains of log driving collected at the bottom of lakes.
Skills you will acquire:
Analysis of fire scars and fire dating
Analysis of cross-sections from subfossil logs
Cross-dating (living and subfossil)
Chronology building and validation
