The main idea of the project is to make an enclosed open space that can be used as : A shading device , seat area or even as a bus stop in reality but it will be with a smaller scale to fit an A3 paper
The user will enjoy the different shapes of the same piece of furniture that could be used for more than one purpose and can can change it to a separate seat area .
This type of urban furniture will be interactive with the users and will be changed according to the sun direction .
Inspired by smart outdoor furniture which is a trend nowadays and more flexible in usage
Proposal 1
1-Shading device before bending
2-Shading device after bending to make seat
Proposal 2
Proposal 3
-The upper part of the shading closes and opens ,the lower part changes to seats
-It also could move on a rail below it to be separated into several strips
These are parts of the linkage between the wooden strips , By using a servo motor , this linkage is similar to the robotic arm linkage as it's concept of movement but not with the same way of using motors .
In my project I will add in the first wooden strip one servo for the upper part (Shading part ) and another servo in the seating part , the rest of the wooden strips will be connected to the first strip with bearings , and it's movement will e according to the first strip servo movements .
Draft prototype of the final project
-firstly I designed it to be with scale 1:20 with foam boards and screws
- Then started to make the linkage of the seat and the linkage between the column and shading with screws
-Then I connected all of them together with screws
-The last step was to tie them with strings to allow it's movement
-Several strips will be placed next to each other in the project with this idea , but with additional options as moving of the strips on rails and sensors to movement and light .
-strings are used to just show the movement of the strips , but in the project in will be moved by two servo motors in the first strip and the rest of the wooden strips will move according to it , an example of this movement is illustrated in the last video
-The model is an example of a seat with a shading above it not a chair only , in the final project for one seat it may be done by 3 or 4 strips , but for now I used 2 strips just to clarify the idea
The final design of the project with the location of bearings and servo motor , it will be with a scale 1:10 :
1.Construction parts :
-The main elements of the shading device will be several slices placed next to each other
-These slices will be placed on a rail in order to make it move
-Made of ply wood and fabricated using Laser Cutting
-The connections between the joints in each strip will be with screws and nuts
an enclosed box will be placed next to it to be used for the control and placing sensors inside it
-A source of light to work as a the sun
2.Input components :
-User input : -Buttons to make the shading change into a seating area , (one Toggle button)
-Buttons to change the seat area to be more private (one slider button) (Right and left )
-Sensing : a sensor ( LDR ) will be placed at the upper part that will change the direction of the wooden strips according to the light source( Sun ) , I will add another sensor also to the shading column , which will automatically sense when someone passes and turns into a seat (Microwave )
3.Action components :
-The wooden strips will start to move according to the sensors and user input when they press on the toggle button ,
This movement will be with the help of a Servo motor
-A buzzer with an LCD screen to notify the user if he changed the location of strips in a wrong direction .
4.Brain :
The enclosed box will be supplied with Arduino
5.Power management :
In the same enclosed box an adaptor will be added for power supply
Functions : This smart shading has 3 main functions :
-Change to seat area
-change it's way of shading .
-change it's shape according to the privacy needed .
Features :
-The lower part f the shading device could be changed into a seating , this is done by a user input with the button , so it starts to get extruded from the shading by a servo motor
-The upper part changes according to the sun direction , by using a sensor , this sensor detects whether we need shading or not and according to this the upper part of the wooden strips starts to open or close .
-Below the shading there will be 2 rails , on these rails the wooden strips start to move over it according to the user input with buttons (In order to have a flexibility in privacy
-This device will be as a model with a size range 35*50 cm , That could be constructed in reality with a bigger scale .
