In 1987, I was diagnosed with four incurable diseases. The prognosis was that I might not live beyond fifty. I am drug-free and in excellent health at the age of seventy-nine because of yoga. I started sharing my core yoga practice, which includes a few asanas, pranayama, and yoga nidra (a restorative relaxation) in 2007. My journey in mindfulness started with Vipassana in 2007 and I have been sharing mindfulness practices in my events since 2011.
About a year ago, I was getting very frustrated with my maiden attempt to write a novel. In a fortunate moment, I asked myself ‘what if yoga is practiced mindfully?’ I started it as an experiment and experienced great benefits for both body and mind. My impulsiveness decreased, my focus improved, and my sense of well-being increased. Though my publisher created problems, I self-published my first novel last month.
My explanation of why Mindful Yoga is very beneficial
Yoga is a holistic system of well-being for the body, energy, mind, and beyond. It is an eightfold path that includes ethical principles, physical postures (asana), breath regulation (pranayama), and meditative practices. Most of us practice only bits and pieces of yoga, influenced by our lifestyles and circumstances. Yet, regardless of the form, anyone who engages in yoga experiences benefits that extend far beyond the body. Scientific research continues to discover more and more benefits of yoga across all aspects of well-being.
Mindfulness is rooted in the teachings of the Buddha. Much of our suffering arises from the mind’s tendency to wander. A wandering mind is an unhappy mind—regrets and resentments from the past, or anxiety and worry by projecting to the future. Our automatic judgments (good–bad, right–wrong, normal–abnormal...) trigger reactive patterns. Paying attention to the present without judgment cultivates mindfulness. Mindfulness helps us to be aware of the judgements, giving us the choice to respond to life rather than react impulsively. Research shows that mindfulness reduces stress, improves focus, productivity, and overall well-being.
Mindful Yoga is fusion of two powerful, ancient systems that are validated by research.
