Grade 7

Adaptive Soundtracks

A soundtrack is a list of previously created musical pieces that are repurposed in a film or TV show.  But an adaptive soundtrack, more commonly thought of as video game music, is music that changes based upon the situation in the game. The music interacts with the gamer and functions almost like a narrator in a traditional story, adding a level of detail that a fixed soundtrack might not bring.

Key Concept

CHANGE is a conversion, transformation, or movement from one form, state or value to another. Inquiry into the concept of change involves understanding and evaluating causes, processes and consequences.

Global Context

SCIENTIFIC & TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATION looks at how these advancements help us connect with each other.

Can we use music technology to communicate with those not from our culture or language?

Statement of Inquiry

SOI: How can art represent a narrative which changes depending on the virtual environment?

All the students were asked to select 2 areas of gaming (Exploring, Finding, Battle, and Victory) and to create an adaptive soundtrack theme. They all used Incredibox, an app installed on their iPads, that allows them to explore ostanati (heavily repeating patterns) and mixing to create dynamic and engaging pieces.  This formative helped the students work and explore within two MYP Criteria and practice an ATL skill. The students will receive feedback on their projects to help them prepare for the summative project at the end of the unit.

Please select your student's class section (7A or 7B) to find their work and that of their peers.

Criterion B: Developing

How do the students synthesize the learning into their work?

Criterion C: Creating

How do the students express their learning in an artistic and musical way?

ATL: Organization

How are the students using this project to develop and hone their organizational skills?
