Grade 10

Movie Scores

The music we hear at the movies can make or break a film.  Good music can enthrall or terrify an audience.  Bad music can ruin an entire film.  But what are the purposes of music in a movie?  Is it there for background filler or it is communicating the unspoken desires of the villain?  Music is an unsung hero in a film and can dramatically impact our enjoyment and connection to the story.

Key Concept

IDENTITY is the state or fact of being the same. It refers to the particular features which define individuals, groups, things, eras, places, symbols and styles. Identity can be observed, or it can be constructed, asserted, and shaped by external and internal influences.

Global Context

PERSONAL & CULTURAL EXPRESSION is how artistry, craft, creation, beauty, and generational artistic expressions can influence the way we communicate ideas and share values.

How does the culture of the story impact the way the music interacts with the film?

Statement of Inquiry

SOI: Identities can be expressed to an audience creatively.

The students have been dicussing the different ways that Music and Film connect: most importantly, how does Music impact the story?  Sometimes a piece is used to establish time and place, and other times it is there to help the audience connect with a character.  No matter the situation, the music must fit the need.  To explore this situations, the students have been asked to develop themes that would fit with classic movie tropes. Swashbuckling pirate sword fight? Check. Dangerous and fast car chase? Check!  The Fellowship battling against a hoard of orcs? Double check!

The students will receive teacher and peer feedback on their experiments to help them become more proficient as they work towards their summative composition.
