Time Management and Organizing Activities
Anuban Udonthani School is a quite disciplined school. The teachers attend the class on time, and of course this is a good thing. One of the keys is time management. I was figuring out how I can conduct a lesson with appropriate time. Beside estimating the time needed in each activity, a timer will also help. I use a timer in the classroom activities so that no activity goes too far beyond what it should be. And it turns out this is quite effective.
Using timer
Saltwater and freshwater experiment
Balloon experiment
Kahoot session
One of the things that students like is experiments and games. They tend to be active and devote their focus to learning. Simple experiments such as inflating balloons with a solution of vinegar and baking soda actually make children excited. Likewise, other simple experiments such as differentiating between salt water and fresh water. With the experiment, almost the entire class became busy with this activity, in a positive meaning of course.
Children really like games. Simple ice breaking can increase their enthusiasm. Likewise interactive games like Kahoot. This game can increase students' sense of competitiveness. With this game, students become more engaged in learning.
Problem Solving + Classroom Management
Anuban Udonthani is a great school. Much bigger than general schools in Indonesia. Likewise, there are many and diverse students in the class. Therefore, good classroom management is needed so that learning can achieve its goals. During the internship period, several problems were discovered which became challenges in themselves regarding how to solve them, of course, the cooperating teachers were happy to help find solutions to the existing challenges.
One of the challenges in this practicum was the diverse characteristics of students. Some were quiet, some were very active. Sometimes I wondered, "how can I get all of their attention and convey the learning objectives?" As time went by, I learned that holding learning in an interesting way is one of the keys. Apart from that, to teach elementary school students, learning must be delivered in a simple way.
In Thailand, English is neither their national language nor their second language so most Thai people do not speak English. Likewise at Anuban Udonthani's school, especially the regular class. However, this is not a big problem because we can use Google Translate and body language. And some basic Thai words will also help.
