Jazz Band

Jazz Band is a group that is directed by Mr. Heid. The group does not require an audition to participate, but does require approval from Mr. Heid. The Jazz Band focuses on introducing and developing jazz fundamentals such as swing-feel, jazz articulations, chord changes, latin-jazz, and improvisation. All students that are encouraged to participate in the Jazz Band; there is no limit to how many students are allowed to be in the group and there is no restrictions on the instruments that are allowed (however, this is often an opportunity for students to learn a secondary instrument that is more prevalent in jazz music).

The Jazz band performs at three events each year: The IHSMA State Jazz Festival, The Southeast Polk Jazz Festival, and the Muscatine Swing Dance. The two festivals that the jazz band performs at offer educational clinics led by acclaimed jazz educators in the midwest.
