It would be worthwhile to place the discussion of music in a time & place. In an increasingly integrated world culture students need to know the roots of Western Music and then be able to appreciate the contributions so many other cultures are making to our musical life.
50 years ago when anyone talked about music, it was understood that the discussion was about the tradition of European musical history embodied by Mozart & Beethoven. Today it's a South Korean pop group, or a new hip-hop star.
