Level 3: One year                   1.0 credit per year                                      Grades 9-12


Prerequisite: None


This course offers the necessary fundamental technical study of music for students interested in the musical arts. Content includes a thorough study of pitch, rhythm, meter and time signatures, scales, key signatures, intervals, tertian triads, seventh chords, interval and chord inversions, and an introduction to Roman numeral analysis and figured bass. Students will build ear training skills through dictation and sight reading exercises.  Students will also engage in activities involving listening to and analyzing musical excerpts and develop basic piano skills specifically relating to concepts explored throughout the course.

AP Music Theory II

911 Advanced Placement Music Theory II


Level 1: One year                   1.0 credit per year                                          Grades 11-12


Prerequisite: Music Theory I or approval of instructor.

 

This course is for students who have successfully completed the Music Theory I course or who demonstrate appropriate prior knowledge.  Students will build upon the concepts explored in Music Theory I and will study harmony, harmonic progression, form, non diatonic harmony, basic composition, as well as advanced aural skills including dictation and sight-singing.  Students are expected to take the AP Music Theory Exam.  Students must have completed the AP Music Theory course to be eligible to sit for the AP Exam.

Level 2: One year                        1.0 credit                                                       Grades 11-12


Prerequisite: AP Music Theory OR 3 consecutive years in H.S. Band, Orchestra, or Chorus. 


Applications in Music builds upon prior knowledge in music theory and/or ensemble performance experience to explore 21st century creativity.  In this course, students will create musical, audio, and visual media using computer-based music notation software, digital audio workstations, and video editing software.  Primarily project-based, this student-centered course will afford participants the freedom to explore creative endeavors and develop a wide variety of musical and technological skills.
