The Execution Of Gom-Bur-Za
After the bloody incident of the Cavite mutiny, the three secular priest Fathers Mariano Gomez, Jose Burgos and Jacinto Zamora was sentences to die because of the allegation sent by Izquierdo to the King of Spain and their alleged complicity in the uprising of workers at the Cavite Naval Yard and with the connection of Cavite mutiny.
The Spanish authorities and prosecutors bribed a witness to testify against the three priest who were charges with sedition and treason. The news of the judgement appears to have spread rapidly, and many Filipinos gathered in the town of Bagumbayan were the execution will happen and then those thousand Filipinos saluted the three priests with their handkerchiefs. Burgos, Gomez, and Zamora had been removed their priestly robes and were chained hand and foot.
And on February 17, 1872, Fathers Mariano Gomez, Jose Burgos and Jacinto Zamora was executed publicly in Bagumbayan. The Spanish main reason to the execution in public is to instill fear among the Filipinos so that they may never commit such treason act again. But after that tragic 1872 GomBurZa execution event, it will be served as one of the moving forces that shaped Filipino nationalism.
