THE CAVITE MUTINY
(PAGHIHIMAGSIK NG MGA CAVITEÑO)
The 1872 Cavite mutiny was drive-by the order from Governor General Rafael Izquierdo to remove the long duration personal benefits to the workers such as tax and the exemption of forced labor. About 200 Filipino military personnel of the Fort san Felipe Arsenal in the Cavite, formed a mutiny that caused a Philippine revolution in 1896.
Spanish Perspective
Based on a Spanish Historian Jose Montero y Vidal’s documentation, the Cavite mutiny is the attempt of the Filipinos to remove the power of the Spanish government in the Philippines. Izquierdo reported to the King of Spain that Indios wanted to have a new leader and overthrow the Spanish government in the likes of the secular priest. Izquierdo even said the King of Spain that the secular priest told to Filipinos that they will not lose because God is with them and they promised that they will give a reward such as work, wealth and a rank in army. In Izquierdo’s he stated that Filipinos is easy to believed and they will a natural tendency to overthrow the Spanish Colonizer.
The Cavite mutiny revolution was easily destroyed because of the mistook fireworks (which they thought as a sign for the attack) from the feast of virgin Loreto that celebrated at January 20, 1872 in the Sampaloc Manila, and just what was the plan, by the leadership of Sergeant La Madrid, the 200 men attack the Spanish officers. The revolution was easily destroyed because the reinforcement in Manila doesn’t ashore, many people died including Sergeant Lamadrid and the Gomburza sentenced to die.
The Filipino Version of the Incident
Based on the Filipino Scholar and researcher Dr. Trinidad Tavera, the Cavite Mutiny is formed by the native Filipino soldiers and laborers of the Cavite arsenal that dissatisfied with the abolishment of their privileges. Based on his version of bloody incident in Cavite, Tavera says that the Cavite mutiny happens not only because of the abolition of privileges of the workers and native army members of the arsenal but also the prohibition of the founding of school of arts and trades for the Filipinos.
Based on Dr. Tavera, the Cavite mutiny revolution is formed by 200 soldiers, laborers of the arsenal, and Cavite residence and in the leadership of Sergeant LaMadrid, After the mistook fireworks from the feast of Virgin Loreto, LaMadrid with 200 men attack the Spanish officers in sight. The expected reinforcement from Manila did not happened and Gov. Gen. Izquierdo immediately orders the reinforcement of Spanish troop. After that, many Filipino troops died including La Madrid, the GomBurZa sentence to die, and the mutiny was declared subdued.
