The Aftermath of the
Execution of GOMBURZA
For 333 years under the Spanish regime, Filipinos were enveloped with ignorance and fear. They were powerless and lost in their own land. Their lives lie in the hands of the colonizers and every action that they will do, must be in favor of the Spaniards. The years under the Spanish government was far from cruel, it was dark for most of the Filipinos. On the other hand, it was only a matter of time before the light will be cast upon them which will make them realize and see the injustices that they had gone through throughout the years.

The friars’ sole purpose in leading the execution of GOMBURZA was to instill fear among the Filipinos. In this way, no one will ever go against them again which will secure their power and influence over the masses. However, the shadowy nature of the trials and execution did not arouse fear but grief and outrage over the friars and the Spanish government. It also left an indelible mark in Jose Rizal’s mind which made him wrote El Filibusterismo in dedication to the three martyred priests aiming to enlighten the society and bring the Filipinos closer to the truth. He had also expressed the unjust treatment and deaths of GOMBURZA at the hands of the Spanish authorities and urged the society to open its eyes to reality and fight for freedom against the Spanish government. Spaniards end the lives of the three secular priests but their actions too started the spark of nationalism within Filipinos’ hearts and drove people to respond with propaganda movement towards a revolution that will overthrow the Spanish regime.
Bright days had finally come. Just like a storm, Spaniards do not belong in our lands and their arrival means no good for our homeland. However, let us keep in mind that every storm weakens once fell on land. Let the events and misfortunes of the past provide us knowledge and will on how to face the present and get through with the storm. Let us not put into waste the blood that had been shed for the love of our motherland Philippines.
