7th & 8th Grade Band

The middle school band combines 7th and 8th graders into one concert band. Students rehearse as a full band and also attend small-group lessons on an A/B week rotation.

R.A.I.D.E.R. Expectations

• R – Respect: treat yourself, your classmates, your director, and all instruments and equipment with care.

• A – Attitude: bring a positive mindset and be willing to learn, even when it's challenging.

• I – Integrity: do the right thing, even when no one is watching.

• D – Dependable: arrive on time, prepared, and ready to play.

• E – Effort: always give your best; progress matters more than perfection.

• R – Responsible: take ownership of your instrument, your music, and your role in the band.

Required Materials

• Instrument in good working order

• Band binder/folder with sheet music (provided)

• Pencil (not pen)

• Reeds, valve oil, sticks, or other accessories

• Method book: Essential Elements (provided)

Grading

• Assessment (50%): playing tests, scales, rhythm drills, music checks

• Daily Work (30%): preparedness, engagement, rehearsal habits

• Employability (20%): attendance and participation at required concerts

Practice

Students should practice 10–15 minutes, 4–5 days per week.

Concerts

MS Band performs at the Fall Band & Choir Concert on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, at 5:30 p.m. All concerts are required. Other concert dates are on the Events & Calendar page.

Repairs & Supplies

A Lanham Music representative visits the school weekly; parents approve repairs before any work is done. Reeds, valve oil, and other supplies can be purchased at school.
