The Transit Electrical Apprenticeship Program is a 36-month program designed to give highly motivated career and technical high school students with backgrounds in electrical, electro-mechanical and automotive the opportunity to demonstrate their abilities, acquire valuable work experience and start building a career. Apprentices get both hands on and classroom training, the chance to earn income while acquiring new skills, as well as the ability to develop new skills in problem solving and troubleshooting.

How to Qualify for the Program
· Must be a graduating senior from an approved CTE High School with a specialty in Electrical, Electro-Mechanical or Electronics Technology.
· Have a school record showing mastery of the chosen specialty area with a good academic (75 Average or better) and stellar attendance record with no more than five (5) excused absences.
· Be a US Citizen, possess a valid Permanent Resident Card, or valid Employment Authorization.

For more than 40 years, the MTA has offered Internships to provide students with the opportunity to gain valuable work experience. The program is proud to boast partnerships with more than 200 colleges and universities throughout the United States. We also host hundreds of local high school students through our various partner programs like the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP), Young Adult Internship Program (YAIP), CTE Industry Scholars and more.

Start by visiting your career services coordinator/advisor. Your college coordinators will need the following documents to add you to our Internship Online Portal:

Unofficial transcript,
Course schedule and bursar receipt
Valid I-20 documents for international students.
Applicants will receive an email with a user ID and login instructions within 48 hours of receipt of the coordinators submission.
Students may apply to up to 12 projects, which should relate to the students major or field of study. Additionally, all projects must be submitted at one time.

Hiring managers will reach out to schedule an interview in the first 3-4 weeks. Unfortunately, we can't take everyone who applies. However, your resume remains in our database for review by managers who have unfilled projects and are seeking specific talent.

The MTA Student Leader Internship Program offers both paid and unpaid internships. While you can apply for both, each have different eligibility requirements.
Note: The MTA does not sponsor H-1B applications for employment or applications for permanent citizenship via the Internship-Mentorship Program.
Unpaid Internship Program Requirements
Students must be matriculated into a degree program either full-time or part-time and have earned 60 credits. Students must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.8. Students must also be available to work a minimum of 14 hours a week.
Students pursuing an associate degree must have at least 50 credits. Additionally, an internship must be a requirement for graduation. Some colleges have other specific requirements which we will handle on a case-by-case basis.
Paid Internship Program Requirements
Must be matriculated into a degree program on a full-time basis. (Undergraduates - 12 credits and Graduates students - 6 credits).
Undergraduate students must have earned 60 credits and have an overall minimum GPA of 2.5.
Graduate students must have maintained a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.8.
Students must be available to work a minimum of 20 hours a week.

The MTA hosts high school students throughout the school year. If your school has received Supplemental Internship Funding (SIF) and you would like to set up a host agreement with us please send an email studentleaderinternship@mtahq.org.
