At the Clinical Biofeedback Lab we study the use of visual biofeedback as a form of intervention for individuals with communication disorders. Visual biofeedback uses instrumentation to provide real-time information about aspects of speech that the speaker has limited insight into under ordinary circumstances, with the goal of bringing these processes under conscious control (Volin, 1998). For this form of therapy, participants are given a real-time visual representation of their speech production. With guidance from the clinician, participants attempt to produce the speech target while watching the display. Participants are taught to modify their own output in an effort to achieve a closer match with the visual model.

Elaine Hitchcock, Ph.D, CCC-SLP is the principal investigator in the Clinical Biofeedback Laboratory. She is a professor and current chairperson in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Montclair State University. Dr. Hitchcock has an active research agenda focusing on two areas: (1) developmental aspects of phonology such as acquisition of the voicing contrast and (2) diagnostic/treatment procedures that combine subjective, perceptual techniques with the more objective data available when using visual biofeedback techniques.
