In the second trimester of Technology Class, students K-2 students shift focus to becoming connected learners in a connected world. Last trimester, students learned a lot about digital citizenship and online safety, and this trimester they spend time doing more collaborating, designing, and becoming empowered citizens constructing their own knowledge.
All three grade levels participate in learning these skills as well as practicing specific sets of skills, based on their grade level and capabilities. In second grade, for example, students spend time doing research and utilizing their web skills to learn content and create presentations. First graders spend the majority of their time fine-tuning their digital safety skills and then begin learning the basics of keyboarding. Kindergarten students practice more digital literacy and continue to explore more programs while they learn how to use a computer properly.
Students are encouraged to problem solve or ask an "expert" who has learned how to troubleshoot the current technology - it's incredible how smart and capable these children are! The students also focus quite heavily on computer programming this trimester, with the Hour of Code having taken place during the month of December. This computer programming experience encourages students to learn the basics of computer science, including problem-solving skills, logic and creativity. USING TECHNOLOGY TO BECOME CONNECTED CITIZENS OF A GLOBAL COMMUNITY
Second grade students participate in Mystery Video Chats. The opportunity provides the opportunity to learn about other geographical locations as well as to research & share about our state.
