Students learn computer literacy to begin the school year. They learn/review how to find programs, key vocabulary terms (browser, text, keyword, monitor, etc.), and how to access files within their profile. Students also begin to learn about digital citizenship and online safety where they how to stay safe in a digital world and examine the parallels between their everyday lives and their digital life. These skills will prepare them for further instruction as we progress throughout the rest of the year. All three grade levels participate in learning these skills as well as practicing specific sets of skills, based on their grade level and capabilities.
In Kindergarten, students practice how to use basic computer parts and how to log in to their student menus. From there, they practice literacy in programs like Starfall. First graders learn how to work more independently and use their knowledge as well as intuition to work through programs like Reading Eggs and Math Seeds. Second grade students begin to navigate their computer to access information they are searching for by becoming more familiar with Internet browsers such as Google Chrome.
All students are encouraged to be problem solvers in order to promote critical thinking skills. Once they learn it, they cement the knowledge into their schema by teaching a friend. As we continue our school year, they will build upon what they already know to become fluent computer users, capable of completing all the tasks necessary to participate in bigger projects, later on.
