I collaborated with my mentor teacher, reviewed previous lessons, prepared scaffolds, and planned aligned materials for units on Earth science and the scientific method. This standard emphasizes intentional planning that aligns with students’ needs, interests, and abilities. I applied it by designing lessons that followed clear objectives, scaffolded learning, incorporated modeling, and included opportunities for independent practice. My planning always centered on pacing, clarity, and student engagement so learning felt structured, purposeful, and achievable.
Strength: I plan instruction thoughtfully by aligning content goals with student needs, pacing guides, scaffolds, and assessments. I prepare materials in advance, collaborate with my mentor teacher, and design activities that build on prior knowledge while supporting students through new concepts like tectonic plates and variable identification.
Weakness: I am developing my ability to predict how long certain activities will take for different learners. Some students finish quickly while others require additional time and scaffolding, which can make pacing uneven. I’m working on creating pacing plans that better anticipate these differences, including adding extension tasks for early finishers and built-in checkpoints for students who may need more guidance. Strengthening this skill will help me maintain lesson flow, maximize instructional time, and ensure that all students remain engaged throughout the entire learning block.
By creating both an advanced lesson plan and a modified lower-level version of the same lesson, I demonstrated my ability to plan instruction that responds directly to the diverse learning needs within my classroom. Teaching two groups of 6th graders with different levels of readiness required me to adjust pacing, vocabulary, scaffolds, and instructional supports so each class could access the content meaningfully. The advanced lesson emphasized higher-level questioning and independent analysis, while the lower-level lesson incorporated chunked text, visuals, guided practice, and simplified language. These intentional adjustments show how I use student data, observations, and ongoing assessment to design developmentally appropriate lessons that meet learners where they are. This approach reflects thoughtful instructional planning that ensures all students have equitable opportunities to learn and succeed.
Using SMART goals played a key role in how I planned instruction during my student teaching because they helped me create clear, intentional learning targets based on what my students actually needed. By breaking goals down into specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound components, I was able to plan lessons that were purposeful and aligned to concrete outcomes rather than general expectations. SMART goals allowed me to identify exactly what skills students were working toward, determine how progress would be monitored, and select instructional strategies that matched their readiness levels. This approach supported my ability to adjust pacing, design differentiated activities, and ensure that every lesson connected to a meaningful objective. Incorporating SMART goals into my planning process strengthened the alignment between my instructional decisions and the learning growth I wanted to see in my classroom.

This assignment required me to identify a learning challenge in this case, student disengagement and difficulty with fractions and explore how technology could be used to support deeper understanding. Throughout the plan, I assessed the technological resources available to students, teachers, and the school community, ensuring that my instructional decisions reflected both access and equity. I then evaluated multiple tools, ultimately selecting PhET Interactive Simulations for their ability to model abstract concepts visually, promote inquiry, and support small-group collaboration. This project demonstrates how I plan instruction with clear intentionality by aligning learning objectives with appropriate technology, designing experiences that meet diverse learners’ needs, and ensuring students have meaningful opportunities to interact with content in engaging, accessible ways.
