Building Bridges

The Building Bridges Program is a career-exploration initiative that provides Howard University students with direct exposure to independent and boarding schools in Boston and Rhode Island. Through school visits, conversations with administrators, and classroom observations, I gained a comprehensive understanding of how these institutions operate and the leadership pathways available within them. The experience broadened my perspective on the education field as a whole, especially since independent and boarding schools were environments I had not previously been familiar with.

A particularly meaningful component of the program was the opportunity to meet with Black students attending a predominantly white independent school. Hearing them express how much our presence, representation, and insight meant to them reaffirmed my purpose as an educator. Their reflections highlighted the ongoing need for teachers who not only teach content, but also support students’ identity, belonging, and voice.

Additionally, connecting with two Howard alumni—both former Building Bridges participants who now teach at St. George’s demonstrated the real and tangible career pathways the program opens. Their experiences showed me how educators can lead, innovate, and create impact across different learning communities.

Overall, the Building Bridges Program expanded my professional knowledge, strengthened my commitment to equity and representation, and exposed me to new possibilities for my future in education.
