To kick off the math unit the students were read the book Have You Thanked an Inventor Today? written by Patrice McLaurin and illustrated by Dian Wang. This book introduces the achievements of African American inventors.
This mathematics unit follows the theme of inventors based on the STEM read aloud. The methods used to create this theme in the unit can be found below.
At the conclusion of most of the lessons in unit one, the students would complete an exit ticket that related to how inventors would use the skill covered in the lesson.
When implementing word problems into the lessons, it was ensured that they all related to a situation or scenario that an inventor could encounter. For example, lesson two related the word problems to a blue print.
When speaking to the students throughout this lesson the teachers used envisioning language by calling the students "inventors" to engage them and help them visualize themselves as an inventor.
