This semester I focused on creating lessons with interdisciplinary connections. I created a science lesson in collaboration with my co teacher that also incorporated mathematic standards as well as reading/writing skills. This lesson was for second grade and focused on the interactions between animals and their habitats.
The following slides were used to guide instruction throughout the entire science unit.
Integration of Math in Science
Lesson one of the science unit focused on the needs of plants and animals. To prove to students that plants need water and sunlight to survive we had them use centimeter cubes to measure the height of both a plant without water and sunlight and one with water and sunlight. The students then compared the height between the two plants and discussed why this was important. The lesson plan for this lesson can be found here:
Measuring Activity
Student Samples
Before beginning the math unit we conducted a read aloud to the class with the book Have You Thanked an Inventor Today by Patrice McLaurin. This read aloud integrated STEM into the math unit and set the theme of inventors. The book contained some engineering content like the blueprint of a hairbrush as well as technology concepts with a little bit on the history of inventions.
